Movie playing problems

My graphics card hasn't been running well in the past 6 months. The idle temp is 80*C and when gaming it goes up to around 100-110*C.

I tried reseating the cooler twice and reapplied thermal paste. But that didn't help. I stopped worrying about it because it didn't have much of an impact on me. I ran Vista for a while with no problems. Then went to XP. Now after going back to Vista I am having problems again.

Most noticeable when watching movies. The movie lags and every 5 - 10 seconds it freezes. I was thinking this might be because my graphics card was overheating. I have been trying to install Rivatuner but it isn't letting me because it says that the x64 driver isn't digitally signed.

I installed nTune instead and set the fan speed to 50%. The temps are now at:

54
67
according to GPU-Z
I guess there are 3 sensors on the card.

I have tried turning off hardware acceleration on VLC player and even uninstalling my graphics card drivers. Still freezes up while watching videos.

Why would this be happening? I can't work it out.

Sounds like your case has poor airflow or your card has a faulty cooling system.
boost the cooling to 100% and see what the temps go to.
 
The airflow isn't that bad. I have a good front and rear fan.

I have an 8800GT, can someone please explain to me where it gets its air from and where it blows the hot air out?

I noticed this problem starting around 6 months ago. Since then the temps have been way higher then they should be. But the cpu temps are everything are fine.

I will try watching a movie with the fan on 100%, however its pretty loud so thats not good. Usually the fan is set to auto so when playing cod5 it gets up to 100% because the temp gets so high...

I talked to the guy at the local computer store here and eh thinks that it is a hardware problem and that I'd have to send it off to get it fixed... :(
 
After trying everything I possibly could, I decided to go back to XP. I wanted to run XP anyway so it wasn't a loss at all. Everything works fine now... :)
 
I spoke too soon. I am still having the problem. Even back on XP with the same driver version and everything. I am going to try downloading Mplayer instead of VLC player... but I really don't understand why this is happening. No matter what settings I try and change the movie skips every 5 to 10 seconds. Therefore you miss like a second or two every 10 seconds. It's ridiculous.

Can anyone please help me? My family usually sits down every night to watch a movie. So this is really painful. I can't solve the problem no matter what I try.
 
I honestly have to question your temps your reporting. 110c would be 230F. Your card would literaly be on fire if it really got that hot. The autoprotect would kick in long before that anyway. The program your using to read the temp is either not fully compatable with your card or your card likely isn't working correctly.

What your having is more likley a driver or codec issue. It could also be a misbehaving program causing your pc to stall.
 
GPU-Z, CPUID hardware monitor and the Nvidia control panel monitor all show the same temp. My card is at around 85*C idle at the moment. It wasn't always like this, but one day something must have happened. If I actually physically feel the card it is incredibly hot when gaming.

I don't know what I can do because I even have a side fan helping to take away the hot exhaust air from the graphics card.

Mplayer works without skipping somehow. But WMP and VLC both don't. I don't know what could be wrong. I have tried 2 different OS's and 2 different driver versions.
