hello all. so i just got an ati 4890, and when i watch dvds (from the original disc) the picture seems a "little fuzzy and blocky". for example when it goes into a red or dark background you can literaly see tiny blocks, and the peoples faces seem a little fuzzy. before i got this card i was using my nvidia 8800gt and all the dvds i played then were crystal clear, no blocks no fuzzyness. ive looked into the avivo settings and messed with every other setting in ati controle center and nothing helps. is there anything i can do that im not thinking of? i thought ati was good for home theatre and HD playback, but so far my 8800gt seems to be better. please help me, as i would like to have this $200 card look better than my old 8800gt. thanks so much

Did you uninstall the nVidia drivers before you installed the ATI card?

The card manufacturers require different drivers, and you'll need to uninstall the nVidia drivers, and install the current drivers for your ATI card.

yes of course i replaced my drivers. i uninstalled them along with the performance and monitor software for invidia, then removed the card, installed the 4890, then installed the newest drivers from ati. when i noticed the grainyness and blockyness, i researched ati avivo and installed that with no luck. it looks like there is almost some kind if filter layered on top of the movie when i watch it, but its just from the distortion, and in certain scenes, it looks somewhat distorted. like part of someones face will be wavy from all the blockyness...any more help please

Have you tried any other discs? There may be copyright protection preventing the images from displaying clearly.

well i dont know what the deal is. iv tried different discs and all the same. i mean they are watchable but the clarity isnt there like with the 8800gt. iv done registry cleaning and tweaking in the avivo and ccc then i tried playing timeshift and that played and looks fine, although other than higher frames, the quality is the same as the 8800gt at 1080p on a 32in tv. so i got irritated and uninstalled the 4890, took all drivers off, reinstalled the 8800gt with its drivers and my movies now look like they should, clear and not fuzzy. i played timeshift and it looks the same with all settings maxed out at 1080p. i wish the 4890 would play my movies clear, because im going to need a new card to replace this old 8800gt with newer games coming out. im thinking maybe if we cant come up with a solution, ill just return the card and get a gtx260? would that be comparible to the 4890, and how is it at overclocking? can i get it to be similar to a 275 or 285?...let me know guys n gals..im pretty bummed. thanks for the help

What type of cord are you using to connect the PC to the TV?

I think the HD 4890 is a better card than a GTX 260.
I think the HD 4890 is equivalent to a GTX 275. (please correct me if I'm wrong)

im using a hdmi cable, its the only way to get 1080p right. so this shouldnt make a difference since i stated that my 8800gt plays my dvds clearly, and the 4890 dont. could it be something to do with the decoder process that the cards do. does ati go about it differently than nvidia? like do they use different decoders? im wondeering if this is what it could be because honostly i cant think of anything else. some Real help would be appreciated. thankyou
