Moving files between computers

I have an old Windows 98 computer that had a virus and when I tried to clean it, it only got worse. I installed AVG on the computer but it had difficulty cleaning the explorer.exe file. And now when I boot up, it says that explorer.exe is too big and something about DOS files being dangerous to run under Windows 98.

So I gave up on it, and Im planning to install Windows ME or better yet Windows 95 on the computer. But first Id like to get some files off of there.

I can access the files and run programs doing the F8/command prompt thing. It doesnt have a CD burner and I dont think uploading anything to the internet is an option. Unless I perhaps install something but it would have to be small enough to fit on 3.5" disks because I cant get the computer to recognize the CD drive in this mode. I also cant figure out the command to move files from the C drive to the A drive and that would take ages to transfer everything that way anyway. And most of the stuff wouldnt fit on one disk...and its like 500 megs that I want moved so thats a lot of disk swapping.

So what are my options? I dont have a cable that could connect the two computers. My other computer has Windows ME. If such a cable is cheap and it would be possible to transfer files that way, Id get one though. Or as a last resort, is there a small program I can install onto the Win 98 computer that would let me spread out the files across 3.5" disks?

I tried to make this question as non-convulted as possible.

First off, if I reloaded that system, I'd go with 98 again. 95 is kinda buggy and not too compatalbe and ME is just plain crap.

As for copyuing the stuff, you could just stick the drive in your other computer. Probably the easiest and fastest from what you appear to have...

I dont have 98 cd's. But how would put the drive in the other computer and have it actually recognize the new hard drive and different OS?

Just switch the drive jumpers toslave(assuming you put it on the Primary channel) and that's it. You might have to set something up in youre BIOS, but most everything should be auto and it'll just pop up as another drive when you load windows.

Thats probably 10 times more complicated than I want to do. Cant I just connect them with a cable and somehow get the files that way?

Well there are ways to use just about any port on the back of a computer(network, USB, Firewire, com, printer...) But adding the HD is really not hard at all and, IMO, there's much less to do. No drivers, cards, new cables, or anything like that is needed.

1. Pop two jumpers (5 seconds each)
2. Change one entry in the bios (<10 keystrokes @ 1second each)
Shouldnt be too complicated....

I suppose you could buy a USB convertor kit but that's prolly more complicated...
