Moving Operating System and Programs to new Drive

Hello all ... I have just purchased a spiffy new hard disk for my pc. It's much faster and more efficient than the ones I have now, and I would like to move my operating system and program files to the new Hard Drive. Is there any way of doing this without completely reinstalling the OS & all of my software? I know I will also have to designate my new Hard Disk as the C: Drive. I'm running Windows XP-SP2 on an AMD 64-bit 3500.
Thx!!:o

Theres no easy way to do it, but what you can do is run the Windows Files and Settings transfer wizard, which will back up all your files and personal settings to another location. But you will most likely need to reinstall windows again.

There is a VERY easy way to move the OS and all the files. Its called Norton Ghost. There are several other programs out there which will do it but I dont know the names off the top of my head.

Another way is dependent on the hard drive manufacturer. I added a Maxtor drive to my old DEC and used a copy program from a downloaded MaxBlast floppy.
1. Leave the old drive in place as Master
2. Install the new drive as secondary as Slave
3. Boot up with the MaxBlast floppy
4. Choose the maintenance option to copy all files
5. Sit back and have a coffee
6. When done, open up the case, and swap the old Master out, fix the cable or jumper to have the new drive be Master, install it.
7. Boot up and enjoy. All your programs and OS are intact and ready to rock.

where would I be able to find this "maintenace option" on my pc to put all the files onto the new harddrive?

It's not on the PC, it's on the boot floppy (or sometimes a boot CD) that supports the new hard drive. For instance, if you bought a new Maxtor drive, then copying of your present drive to your new Maxtor drive should be shown as a maintenance option when you boot with the MaxBlast installation/maintenance disk.
