Moving to the US

Hi
We are moving to the US from UK and are trying to decide best way to get our computer files over there with us.
We are planning on having a laptop over there rather than a desktop-I think,so the equipment is not really an issue (wouldl it work anyway ? With a power coverter?)

These are things we have thought about, but not sure how viable each is

We can either ship the tower with our shippers but will take 3-6 weeks
Take the hard drive out of the computer and take that in our hand luggage
But we have no real idea what we would need to do with the hard drive once over there!
Could we put files onto a large memory stick?

If we took the hard drive out could we put a new hard drive in?-we were thinking about giving it to a relative here in the UK.

This is probably anovice question but we have had various bits of advice which are all different. Just personal stuff on it-photos,CVs,study assignments etc.Nothing to do with work.

you could purchase an External Hard Drive or somehting...that would mean you could store practically as much as you want...but without the issue of having to connect a Desktop HDD to a laptop.

Soooo
We would transfer all our files from our hard drive on our computer onto the external hard drive and then connect that to a laptop over there?
If the lap top had the capacity, could we then load the files up onto the laptop from the external drive ?

If this was our choice, what could we safely do to wipe the hard drive on our desk top here before giving it to a relative/throwing it away?

Thanks for the help!
