MPEG4 to MP3

Hello, I would like to convert MPEG4 file to MP3.
I went to a shop and asked a clerk if they have such software. He said it's technically impossible to convert MPEG4 to MP3 and the only one possibility is to take sound out of MPEG4 and convert it to MP3. Is he telling truth?
What can I do if I want to listen to MPEG4 file on my ipod nano? I only need to listen.

But it doesn't work. It seems that was just Text documents and no software.
Is it because I am using macbook? I am sorry, i really don't know nothing about computer.

I googled for "Convert tune" but it was not for Mac. I am sorry to tel it late but I am using Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Someone please tell me something that i don't know. I thought that MPEG is a video format where as MP3 is audio, so translation between the two wouldn't make much sense. Waht am I missing?
