msi gtx 780 lightning or r9 290x ref

oke a friend of mine has a msi gtx 780 lightning, but a poor overclocker, now he can change his card against a sapphire r9 290x, oke I now that it is loader, more heat and uses more power, but what would by faster??

I couldn't tell the difference between 780 and 290 (non-X), but I'm pretty sure the 290X is faster - especially at higher resolutions.
However, the reference versions should be avoided like the plague, in my opinion. I have the ASUS 780 and it's dead quiet, even at load. Had the 290 MSI Lightning (RMA'd for coil whine), but it was also dead quiet at loads (in terms of fans)

Just tell him to keep the 780.. he would be wasting his time moving from that to a 290..

I still wouldn't bother with the upgrade. The 780 is a beast by itself.

Instead of MSI you should get your card from Sapphire. Their cards are the best.

msi is still a good brand, and the make cards from both brands, sapphire only makes cards based on amd cards.
