MSI GX640 - black screen after windows logo

Hey, i posted this in the MSI forum but with no luck - i hope you gus can help me out:

About 3 years ago i bought the MSI GX640 - the specs are as following:
Intel core i5-430M
ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB DDR5 VRAM
Ram: 2*2 GB DDR3
64 bit

As the title says, i have a problem with the screen turning black after showing the windows logo. This problem started about two years ago - but it dissapeared again shortly after.. almost a year later, the screen broke(litteraly, a lamp fell on it) and i had it replaced - when i got back my computer, it worked fine, but the black screen problem quickly returned.. Frustrated i tried to reinstall windows 7.. this worked for 7 boots, and then it couldt boot again without the screen turning black(when the screen turns black, the HDD also completely stalls, and the indicator for activity is not blinking).
Then i tried win 8 and the computer started perfektly. But when i tried to reboot it(i didnt install any drivers - it was only windows 8 that was installed), it couldn't boot. When it had shown the windows logo for about 10 seconds, the screen turned black, and the HDD indicator stopped blinking.

I have tried the following to fix the problem:
Changed the HDD.
Cleaning it.
Removing and reinserting the BIOS battery.
Installed win 8 and 7 several times.
Removed the battery.

Do you have any suggestion to what might be causing this error?

Thanks in advance :D

I got this answer:

When booting up your PC hit F8 after the BIOS initializes, in the Advanced Boot options hit VGA Mode. The problem your describing typically happens when either your video resolution is set too high or its set to display to an external monitor, you could also try hitting the Fn key + (usually F2) to see if that switches it back to your screen.

The fact you're seeing the BIOS and Windows starting means nothing is wrong with the hardware and its all software. I don't know too much about AMD video cards but I would recommend removing them, using Driver Fusion to remove all the leftovers and doing a fresh install of the AMD video drivers.

Try VGA mode first, for Windows 7 its pretty easy, just spam F8 while booting and hit VGA mode (or 640x480) and it will start windows up in low resolution. If that doesn't work then try startup repair, may want to try to restore a older system restore point.

If in Windows 8 the process is much the same you just have to hold Shift when mashing F8.

Try that first and see what you get. It could be hardware but from what your getting that doesn't seem likely.

An i answered this(and then they stopped answering):

Thanks the the quick answer Neoistheone2000!
I tried hitting F8 after the BIOS initialized, but nothing happened(i tried all the other buttons aswell). F8 didnt help aswell, even though i also thought that it might be the answer to my problems..
When i turn on my PC i am greeted with these three options:
"Press <DEL> to enter setup"
"Press <F11> BBS POPUP Menu"
"Press <F3> to run OS recovery"
I tried the all to see if i could find an option with VGA mode, but with no luck.. i also tried Windows repair a dusin of times. On the othér hand, i am not sure that it is because it chooses the wrong screen, since the HHD also stops working.

I sat for a few ours and played with the settings in the BBS POPUP Menu, but nothing happened - i got frustrated and choose to reset all of the settings in the BBS menu..

After doing this, i turned it on and spammed all of the buttons on the keyboard and suddenly it turned on perfectly. I was happy and turned it off and back on to see if it could it again, but no, the three options i get at every boot was gone, and i got a Black screen with white text saying:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

This Product is covered by one or more of the following patents:
US5,307 US5,434,872, US5,732,094, US6,570,884, US6,115,776 AND US6,327,625

Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2,31 (10/12/09)
PXE-E61 : Media test faliure, check cable
PXE-M0F : Exiting PXE ROM.

After this the Windows logo appears, whereafter the screen goes black, and the HDD stops working. I was sad to see that it still didnt Work, bur when i turned it on again worked. I tried turning it on and of once again and now it gave the same error with the black screen with white text, whereafter it couldt start. The fun thing is that my computer now Works every second time i turn it on, and fails to boot every second time i turn it on. When the coputer is turned on without a boot failure it seems to work fine (so it cant be a hardware problem?)

Do you have any other suggestions? :D

I hope you can help me out - sorry for the long thread:

Nope, would have to send it in to get diagnosed/replaced. The motherboard would have to be replaced.

Okay, thanks alot :D
- is there any chance that it might be something else since i works perfektly every second time i turn it on? I have been using it all day with no problems? I can even use the button "reboot" with no problems.. It only has the problem if i turn the computer completely off..

If this was a desktop, I would say its a power supply issue but with it being a laptop, its seems its a motherboard issue.

I tried going back to Win 7 - now it only works when i use windows rapair.. the PXE-E61 : Media test faliure is gone, and now it says this instead: BOOTMGR is missing..
does this mean anything to you?

When you get the pxe message, that means its trying to boot to a network first which means it can't detect a hard drive.

You've already said that you have used a different hard drive so you don't have a bad hard drive. I'm still saying this is some sort of motherboard issue.

Check your bios to make sure your sata controller setting is set to ahci mode and that the hdd is set for first boot device. Other than this, you will need to take it in to have it replaced.
