If I was going with an AM2 model board at this time the K9N might be a consideration as a substitute for an Asus board. The fsb is typical of most newer board seen with 1000mhz x 2 HT. It does seem to have some support by having two PCI-E 16x slots. But the model that offers real support for any serious SLI setups would be the MSI K9N SLI Platinum model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130048
Scrub the Epox crud! I would certainly go with an Asus board long before any DFI model if planning an SLI or Crossfire setup by a long shot. MSI even stands a little taller then DFI.
You must be a budget builder, no wonder you like MSI boards. MSI is in there with PCChips and ASRock in motherboards, they make good video cards! If you built as many as I have you would not even think about ordering MSI boards, too many bad boards!! Had to RMA to many, does not make customers happy!!
Even Asus has had bad batches of boards come out with different models like the A8N SLI Premium Socket 939 was a disaster waiting to happen. But they just happen to be one of the top brands. So you can't always by what make saw some bad boards. One old article that sums up why? this is often seen can be read at http://www.badcaps.net/
MSI specifications generally stand above many makes like Abit, DFI, certainly Asrock, PC Chips, ECS, Mach Speed, Shuttle, Soyo, and others.
I,m not talking about bad batches, I,m talking about over all there boards. When you get 3 or 4 DOA or screwed up out of every 10 you order it doesnt matter how well the ones that run are. there in the same league with Abit-Asrock-PCChips-ECS. Really Shuttle and Soyo used to be really good boards! But their definitely not in the same league with Asus-DFI-Gigabyte-Epox
I certainly won't put DFI or Epox in the same catagory as Asus. DFI is more in the Abit catagory there. Funny I've too many report seeing good results with MSI boards they have used. And 3 or 4 out of 10 suggests that you were doing something wrong to see that many go wrong?
I'm not sure about the K9N but I know for a fact the K8N is a very solid board. Both my brother and a friend of ours is running the K8N. Our local lan center of about 32 computers also runs the K8N motherboard. I'm sure the K9N is just as solid.
When looking over different makes to see which one I would go if deciding on a substitute for an Asus board the MSI models stood out when compared to other makes. Likewise one Gigabyte micro atx board stood out for what it offered. That was in mind before the sudden need for a new build last spring.
