Multiplayer Gaming

This is probably really simple and asked 10 times a day but im trying to figure out how to make my multiplayer gaming work on Flight Simulator 2004, I talked to a guy who said i had to open some ports on my router? He didnt exactly know how to do it or explain it to me, can anybody help me out here?
