Multiple Fried Hard Drives

Hey All,

I am now once again getting the same disk read error that I had gotten about 5 months ago with my last hard drive. What is frying these things? I'm suspecting the power supply since the fan is starting to go out. Maybe it's the motherboard communication? It seems to work fine for a few months and then one day just stops reading completely. WTF. Everything else has been fine for the last 5 years, other than the floppy drive that also died.

My system is an AMD 1.2GHz Athlon 'Thunderbird' with 256MB DDR RAM, Asus A7V (I think) motherboard and Antec case and power supply, etc.. It's a dinosaur these days, yes. But, I'm writing this on a new Dell laptop from work so it's okay. However, I would like to get my home PC up and rolling again with minimal investment. Can I fix this or should I just drop $800 on a whole new system? I'd much rather buy a new bike than computer but I do digital photography so a computer is kind of essential. :D Thanks.

Heat is really bad for HDs. You may need a csae fan. Make sure it draws air through the pc, instead of just blowing air into. On the side of all fans are 2 arrows . One is rotation the other is the way the air goes.
 
yeahh, thats what i bought a while ago, i think i got mine from Ebay, 4 like $10, i seen 1 on that link 4 $6, thats cheap as helll.
 
If you've got a volt-meter, you can check the voltages on the power supply yourself (be very careful though). The Power Supply should have the voltages listed on it and the tolerances. I.E. + .5.

If the PSU is faulty, that should tell you.

Again, BE CAREFUL!!!!!

If you dont have a volt-meter, a simple one can be had for around $20

And once again, BE CAREFUL!!!!

P.S. --- It is not really that dangerous, and remember, touch every other pin, I.E 1 and 3 and 2 and 4, to get the different voltages. There are two voltages that run to each HDD. Consult Google and your multimeter manual for specific instructions.
