Multiple Home Servers

Alright.
I want to convert a section of my closet, for a server rack.
What I mean by that is, buying or building a shelfing unit. And fit like 6 or something.

First, what type of servers can I make and host?

I am interested in a file server, for storing home files. Like home photos.

Let me know.

Whats the best OS? Do they all need monitors?

Ext.

Thanks.

i here that the new windows home server is good. it is still beta but it i think will be free

I would run Linux. you dont want to go with a bata or first release of any windows OS.

no you dont need a monitor or keyboard or mouse for each get a KVM switch.

Go with the OS you're the most comfortable with....
That would be true but if he setting up a True server his coices are Linux or Windows 2000 server and 2003 server or home server.

He will have to learn about setting up and running a server OS so
it doesnt really matter what one he goes for.

I admin Server 2003 at work so this is the OS I run on my setup

Server OSes suck, all of them suck. Well, they all have crappy things about them. I have battled with them all, but IME, my Linux boxes pretty much never crash, even after hardware failures.

1st off, if you are going to toss 6 rack mount servers in your closet you better pipe some A/C directly into that closet or you will start a fire. Our server room at work runs at like 60 degrees with approx 60 to 70% humidity, because if it gets dry you get static, static discharge (or ESD) can kill hardware.

2nd - Windows server OSes are expensive, and hardly even the most serer OS used, unless you are working in like an Active Directory Environment.

3rd - What is the purpose of the servers, to learn? you can learn on crappy old PCs, you don't need to purchase rack mounts

4th - power, you better have some good UPS system in place to condition all that power you are going to consume with your servers. Our UPS rigs are like 600lbs each, LOL, it took 4 huge guys with crow bars to take it off the pallet skid, then I had to wheel it across the floor into the server room. Thank god it had wheels on it.
