music and video sharing file server

i might be getting a computer from my school as part of the club i participate in. i am really interested in making it into a music and video sharing server. i have a desktop and a laptop, and i would hate to have to update both with my current music and movies. what software (open source or otherwise) would be good for making a music sharing server? can i use winamp or songbird to access music files through a networked server?

I know you can do a basic one through Windows Network (a home network) but I'd like to see what other software is available.
