Music notation software?

I'm looking for music notation software that will allow me to write simple music on the computer rather than paper-and-pencil. Similar to music software like Sibelius or Finale, but those are SO expensive - surely there's a simple free software package out there.

If anyone has been successful with free notation software, I'd be grateful to hear about it!

GUITAR PRO 5.2 is the best! guitar pro 6 is ok, but i still prefer guitar pro 5.2. I'm an self-thought piano player, and i used guitar pro to learn how to play, and it helps a lot! The sound is not very very accurate . GP 5.2 comes with an "RSE pack " (real sound editing) that comes with more accurate sounds. Still, is an awesome software, very easy to use, easy to compose! weather you're an guitar player, keyboard player or even drum player :D:D:D
