Music Software

Hi all,

I am currently looking to buy a new laptop which I will be using for college in the fall in which I am majoring in music, so it will mostly be used musically. I don't want to start a flame war between macs and PC's, but I've heard that music programs are much better for the mac than the pc. I am looking for some opinions on this from people who have used or have knowledge of both music software for the mac and the pc. This is just taking in consideration of solely the music programs, I don't care about price difference of the computers or hardware differences. And again, I don't want a flame war, so don't post on the lines of 'pc's are best' or 'macs rule'.

Thanks.

What kind of music software like editing software or software to listen to music?
you need to provide more information for us to help you.

if editing software pro tools? it works on mac and pc

Editing software. Ex. Garage band, for the mac and music writing tools like finale both for the mac and pc.

I've heard that the mac layout makes everything much more efficient and is much easier to use. For the programs that work for both, is there really a big difference between them, or is the main difference between mac and pc the programs that can only be used on one of them and not the other?

A good one is audacity and its free. To make your own beats you can use Virtual DJ or FL Studio. Are you willing to pay for software?

Majoring in music, he should expect to.
Logic is supposed to be amazing. I know many audio editing programs are available on both mac and PC.
Either way you go, im sure you'll be able to find something that meets your needs.

Audacity is much easier to work with and a very good program!

OP simply said he/she was majoring in music so if the OP majoring in some sort of audio, it may not be powerful enough for him/her. I got the sense the op was looking for high end software.

Thanks for all of your input. I have decided to go with the mac. Which comes to my next question. Macbook or macbook pro? Now I probably should have been more clear in my first post, I will be majoring in music education, so although I will be using music programs, I'm not going to be someone who is going inot recording stuff and all that stuff that needs an awesome computer to handle. According to mac, the macbook is for the average user and the macbook pro is for the professional. I will be right in the middle, so I'm trying to decide if it is worth $600+ to go with the pro over the book. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm probably am, but the differences I see between the macbook and the macbook pro, are the screen size, screen type (glossy or matte), and graphics card. This is comparing the middle end laptop of the macbook and the low end of the macbook pro, so the hardware, aside form the graphics card, are similar.

Any input is welcome.
