i have no idea with this raid thing so i was hoping you guys could help me out, im going to have about 4 hard drives in my computer after i have built it, the one hard drive will have the OS on, one to store music and videos on, another with stuff on that i wont be accesing all the time (is there a way to switch the drive off in windows whilst im not using it?) and im yet to buy another drive. help me out with which drive should be on which raid :D

a raid takes multiple drives and combines them for to increase space, fault tolerance, or both. you basically make multiple hard drives seems as 1 at least to windows.

so you cant put an os on 1 drive.. and music on another. you could partition them out afterwards and put your os on C and your music on D but your data is still going to cover the 4 hard drives or however you have it set up.

ther is actually another thread going on that is really similar to this. i will link you.

As quiltface noticed, I'm thinking you probably don't understand what RAID means and think it's something you have to do with multiple drives, which isn't true (and don't anyone give me that JBOD is a raid type BS :P). You can have all the drives running side by side without a problem.

Sure you can. Sure the 'My Music' default folder will be on the same drive as the OS unless you configure it to go somewhere else but if you just have a monitored folder you can put it on any drive you want.

You can set up the drives to hold whatever you want, just go with what makes sense. It might be a good idea to dedicate a drive to backups.

that is exactly what im going to do, set up the my music/video folder to be directed to another drive, im not bothered if i ever loose my music and videos becuase i can easily get them all back from the net, the drive which i want only for use now and then is the one which i want to make sure it stays fine, can i turn it off in anyway without having to disconnect the drive when i dont want to use it?

So for what you need, you do not need a RAID setup. All you need to do is install the drives and then remap your various folders to a different drive, which is very easy.

The hard drives spin down when not in use, which saves power and greatly reduces wear. Once you need to access data the hard drive will spin back up.
