My 1st Build - Not starting up!

Hi all,

I recently started a thread (-->) asking your opinions on the stuff for my first build. Well, I followed the suggestions I got, and received all the stuff today.

Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 770 Socket AM2+ ATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 Processor
Sapphire HD 4650 512MB with 1GB HyperMemory GDDR3 PCI-E Graphics card
OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU
OCZ 4GB DDR2 800Mhz/PC2-6400 GOLD XTC Memory Kit
1x SATA 500 GB hard drive, 1x DVD drive

Unfortunately though, after putting it all together, I'm not getting any display after pressing the power button. All the case fans are running, PSU seems to be working well, the fan on the graphics card and the CPU heatsink is runnning, there is power in all USB sockets on the motherboard and I can hear the hard drive running as well, although the DVD drive doesn't eject its tray.

After having a look at the following image, can somebody please tell me if I did something wrong? If its all right, why is the display not there?

Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance ... :)

bomberboysk, everything is connected as shown in the image. I have two 4-pin CPU connectors from the PSU though, I don't know what the second one is for. I also have 2 connectors labelled PCI-E (from the PSU), but the Sapphire HD4650 doesn't need external power, so that's not an issue ..

Bodaggit23, I tried what you suggested, trying to boot with just one memory stick, and neither of them alone got the system to boot.

Another thing that worries me - the fan on the Sapphire HD4650 sounds similar to someone revving a car engine. The speed doesn't stay same. Its very high and loud for about 2 seconds, suddenly becomes quiet for about half a second and then speeds up again! This is not normal for a graphics card, is it?

According to the motherboard manual, the connections on the motherboard are:
1x 24-pin ATX main power connector - connected
1x 4-pin 12v power connector - connected
1x floppy didk drive connector - haven't got a floppy drive
1x IDE connector - connected, DVD drive
6x SATA 3Gb/s connectors - 1x connected, 500GB Seagate Baraccuda
1x CPU fan header - connected
2x system fan headers - no, all case fans have molex connectors
1x power fan header - umm, what's this?
1x Northbridge fan header - I don't know what this is for either!
1x front panel header - connected
1x front panel audio header - connected
1x CD in connector - no
1x chassis intruder header - not supported by case
1x power led header - it has 3 pins, but the connector provided by the case has just 2!
1x serial & parallel port header - no
2x USB 2.0 headers - 1x connected
and a few other audio headers which I don't need ...

So, the connections are all okay, I think, but I don't know anything about Northbridge fan header ...

Well, the best thing you can do right now is start testing components one by one. I would go for the GPU first, because what you described with the fan is unusual. It also might be related to the power supply, so I would test that second.

PohTayToez, when you say test each components, you mean disconnect everything else and see if the connected component switches on, yeah? I tried that, everything works now - hard drive, fans, USB sockets, ethernet socket, DVD drive etc. But how do I test the GPU??

Just thought I should mention this, I tried starting the system without any RAM sticks, but didn't hear any beeps or tones from the case speaker, even though its connected. How would I check whether the speaker is working? If it is working, does the lack of any beeps mean there is something wrong with the motherboard?

Thanks for the help so far, please do keep the replies coming!

Do you have any other pci-express graphics cards? If you do, put it into the rig and test it out.

I wish I did, but the desktop I use now uses an AGP graphics card ..
But I'll try and get it checked on a friend's PC, if they have any PCI-E slots.

What about the no RAM, no beep issue?

I mean find a second computer that you know that works and test each of your new components in it one at a time. I would worry about the GPU, PSU, and RAM first, as those are easy to test and are commonly problematic. If all of those work then it's probably the CPU or mobo.

Just wanted to let everybody know that its booting and working alright now! :D

I tested the graphics card, RAM and PSU on another system and they were working. So I pulled the whole setup apart and started from scratch. When the time came to chuck in the processor, I found out that it had one pin bent, at about 75-80 degrees!! I was so excited during my first attempt, so I rushed through and was not careful enough, I suppose.

Thank you once again everybody!

im having the same problem =[

Your system not booting up??

It's amazing how one pin would do the trick :P When I built my rig, and it didn't start, it was the four-pin CPU power connector :) Then I had a faulty copy of XP x64... That made things unpleasant.. :|

What's the issue Jason12345?

He got scammed into buying a non working computer off a paintball forum apparently.

Indeed, when it refused to startup the first time, I decided my first rig will be the last - its very nerve-wracking for a first time builder! But now that its all done, I'm feeling more confident now! And the new system is working perfectly - Very fast, great graphics, lots of space for future upgrades!

Jason12345,
Scammed? Ouch!! How much did you have to pay?
Hope it gets sorted out soon ... :)

not really nerve wracking, sometimes parts are DOA and it happens not only to first time builders, can happen to anyone.

well i only paid $90 so im not to too mad about it but if worst comes to worst ill just have a good exsuse to buy a new one =p im gonna try rebuild it like you did wish me luck.

Well, that's right. But its not just about the condition of the parts, is it? Its also about how you handle things, your knowledge of & experince with them etc etc. For example, I don't really have much technical knowledge of motherboards, processors & graphics cards. I just stated my budget and I got the complete parts suggestion from you guys, and I just bought them!!

Good luck!! :) I'm sure you'll get an excellent system up and running. This was my first time, and the system was running in 2 days, although I had the minor glitch with my processor ..

Anyhow, I hope it goes well, jason12345 ...
