My 800 xms2 is running at 400... why?

Basically i'm running everything in my signature, when i run cpu-z it shows my ddr2 xms2 pc 6400 800 mhz running at 500 mhz, its a 4-4-4-12 and here's a screen shot of it

im trying to atleast get it running at full speed but its not working i tried to do some bios settings but im not good at overclocking and basically dont know how to get it up to 800 can someone help?

my guess, DDR is dual data rate. it does 2 processes in 1 pass. there for, 400MHz, is only single. BUT! since you have dual data rate, it does 400MHz x 2 (because of 2 passes at one time) = 800MHz in the end. your fine.

its just weird tho dude my system feels like its as slow as my old pc 133 pentium 3 computer it lags a bit on system start up, it takes a while on the winodws loading screen and then it takes its time with windows login and stuff... what could it be? are my settings from cpu-z good? argg so aggrivating

What is the amperage on the 12V rails? If you don't know look on the side of you Power Supply and there should be a label. On it will be a section with
12V1
12V2
....
We don;t need to know the -12V

If its slow starting up have you tried disabling uneeded programs through MSCONFIG?

If not:
Go to Start
Click Run
Type msconfig, click OK
Click the last tab called Startup
Disable anything uneeded (I have everything but two or three disabled)
Click OK and choose Restart
When you reboot next time a box should pop up, check the little box, and hit ok.

Notice that your RAM latencies are running at 5-5-5-18? This is because you're RAM is running at 2:3 of FSB. You need to go inot BIOS and change the multiplier on your RAM. Other things like the amount of programs that start-up when windows boots up can cause it to be slower than normal, also as you put more things on your hard drive, it will run slower. You may need to defrag your comp. You're processor could be overheating and throttling itself.

Everything is normal, it's DDR so its double-data rate memory. Basically you double the speed that CPU-Z shows to get the effective speed, it's the same on video cards which use a version of DDR.

hermmm so should i get a better cpu fan? My psu is fine? good news i guess :D

i'll buy a new cpu fan this weekend. also could a big part of the problem be that im using a 20gb ide hdd? rofl i had to return the 2x 500gb satas cuz i needed the money and only had a 20 gb ide old school drive. that could be causing alot of lag to huh?

hmm well im overclocking it all right now, my cpu temp is pretty stable around 45c so dont really think its over heating. got my fsb at 1100mhz but i got it to 1300 last night so ima try for that again, also got my ram to 880 last night.

not sure if i can get them any higher, i raised them up to that, system hang, set voltages 1 up then 2 up then 3 up and still didnt boot so i just reset all bios and got it to 1100 and 840, ill be doing more tests after work but if anyone else has an opinion i appreciate it

No, it's because it's SPD is programmed to use 5-5-5 @ 800MHz DDR. To get 4-4-4-12 you have to assign it manually in the BIOS, and more than likely increase the voltage.

Your system slowness could be cause by the drive but it's more likely a software problem.

thnx for the answers, but my system is running wonderful now. i did set the latency to 4-4-4-12 in the bios and it runs nice, still showing 400 mhz in cpu-z but im assuming cuz its dual channel.

No, it's because, as said before, it is DDR. When you see DDR-800, it is just DDR that is 800 not the actual speed. It really runs at 400MHz but because it is double data rate people say it runs at 800.

Dual channel is a way of almost doubling the bandwidth (again) by more or less combining 2 channels into one.

Because they are bothing saying the DDR speed not the actual speed. Your motherboard BIOS is telling you the DDR speed and CPUz is telling you the actual speed. DDR RAM can send data 2x per clock cycle so the effective rate is 2x that of the real one. RAM manufacturers label RAM at the effective rate because it sounds faster.
