my backup hd is clicking weirdly and prevents booting

I havn't had much luck recently. My main tb drive has had bad sectors recently.. Im trying to back it up.

The drive Im using to back up data is one of my old ones, maybe havnt used it for 3 years, can drives still decay if not used?

If I connect it, it makes five high speed clicking sounds.. about 5 or 6 times and my comp freezes at the logo. Bizzarelly it still responds to the tab button (but nothing else) and it will then freeze at memory frequency 1600 mhz, and once it said ide channel master 3.

If I pull the sata cable, the computer boots just fine, but it still makes those damn clicks. did my hd somehow die during disuse? :(

The bad sectors on my main drive have gone up to 8 and the read error rate to 2227, im getting scared. damn wish i could backup atm.

Just drill a screw into it.

But to answer your original question, your hard drive is bad if it clicks. Defective hard drives can prevent a system from booting.

I see, thanks. It is so depressing that drives can still die, even if stored well in anti static wrap.. I seriously have to rethink my long -term storage strategies!.

I am currently backing up to another spare drive.. and I can see the read error rate of my main one sky rocketing .. crap.
