My basement flooded and my computer got wet...

Monitor has a line running on the side of it now. I'll replace that. The space bar on the keyboard doesn't work. Will also replace that.

Now to the part I have a question about...

My computer comes on and boots up (waited a little less than three days to turn it on so it could dry out), and the internal hard drives all appear to have all of the data okay on them (although I might need some advice on how to salvage an external).

Anyway... the computer doesn't seem to recognize my video or graphics card. My windows performance index (using windows 7) list them both as 1/7.9, the screen looks really stretched out now and when I check to see what's listed as in my computer it's saying I just have a generic graphics card. I also can't run Daz3d or any programs/games that make use of my high end graphics card.

Is the problem the mother board or the graphics card? How do I check, and is there some way for me to salvage the video card if that's what the problem is?

Thanks,

Plandr

Your keyboard you can fix, take off the keys and dry it out. It appears your graphics card is gone, there's nothing you can really do about that.

It is very important in the event that your computer gets water in it that every component completely drys out before switching the machine back on. Was there power running through the machine at the time of the flood?

Yeah. I turned the computer off and then tried to move it to higher ground but I slipped and part of the computer was submerged in the flood. So I just took it upstairs and let it dry for about 72 hours. The monitor I knew it was too late for because it was already in the water for a while when I got downstairs.

I don't really mind replacing the graphics card, but I just want to make sure it's the graphic card I need to replace. I don't want to buy a new one if it's actually some sort of motherboard issue.

If the PSU switch was on at the time of the flood it will be a new motherboard, graphics card, CPU could possibly be alright, Ram should be ok, HDD's well you were lucky there, don't know about your dvd drive. Could be an expensive process.

Okay cool but how do I know/check?

Not sure what you mean there.

1. If you mean how to check if the psu switch is/was on the switch will indicate "I" if it was off it would indicate "O"

2. If you mean how do you know if your gear is ok Make sure everything is completely dry and power up your gear and go to device manager check that there are no issues there then just leave it on test out programs/games make sure you don't get any BSOD and go from there.

Try reinstalling the graphics driver to see if that fixes the issue. The device manager should list what specific card you have, thats why I'm saying to update the graphics drivers.

Water

I don't know if this is an answer for you but I've dropped my cell phone and water and even ran it through the washer. What I did was get some rice fill up a box with it. Leave it in there a few days and the rice will somehow absorb the moisture in it. It's worked twice so far so it must work. Maybe you can do it with a computer. I also know they do sell some kind of absorbent you can use also.
