My cd and floppy drives

Hi. I am having trouble with my cd rom drive and my floppy drive. when I go to use them i receive an error message that says the device is not ready. What does this mean and what causes this. How do I fix this? Ive tried rebooting the system and i still get the message. Sometimes it takes forever but I can go into my computer and it will recognize something in the disk drive but most of the time I get the error message . Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
 
If this is an old system, both floppy and cdrom drives go bad. Try swapping them out with known good working drives.
 
You can give it a try but i doubt it. If it reads cd's occasionally then its a bad drive.
