Hey everyone! This time I've got some serious business. I'm building a micro, but that isn't the issue. The issue is my gateway serial number 0025541832 model number 500C CTO is a problem child and I think its something inside the computer. We have had to take it to our local computer shop 4 times and I was wondering if anybody else with a gateway with a similar model number or similar gateway has experienced these problems where they have to take their computer to the shop it gets so bad. Is there something wrong with my components so I can explain to my parents it isn't my fault!?! Is it the motherboard? The BIOS chip, the RAM, the processor or the power supply even?!??? So I have decided to build my own micro computer so that my parents cannot blame me for messing up the computer. Please guys just help me out on this, and thanks so much.

Can you describe the sort of problems you've had? Did the technicians who worked on it tell you what the problem was, or whether they needed to replace anything?

They said the problem was too much stuff was downloaded apparently bogged down the computer also I remember it just not starting up to windows we had to use safe mode, numerous other problems I can't think of but they replaced the video card, hard drive, like twice, and windows xp each time.

If you took it to a circuitcity/bestbuy shop, please check that your components are in the same specifications or better, because i had an gateway and i did the same thing as you did, they changed everything and put a shitty AMD duron mobile processor i had to complain to them because they wanted to scam me in the end i got a new pc off them for free

Well, there's a few issues here. If the hard drive and video card have been replaced, those are hardware failures that you aren't responsible for (assuming you haven't opened it up yourself, and caused some damage). Those failures are very likely unrelated, however, and don't point to any more persistent/design fault.

Downloading too much stuff won't break your computer - downloading the wrong things can. If you've accidentally installed spyware/viruses/etc... that could potentially cause your system to fail to boot. If you've simply installed too many programs that run each time your system starts, that could cause significant slowdowns.

Yea, now that ive read that i remember that one of the problems was a virus. But replying to the other comment what do you mean take it to a best buy shop and change the parts? Please update guys.

The specifications on this system are pentium 4 1.5ghz processor, 384 mb sd ram, radeon 7000 series video card, motherboard i have no clue cause its a gateway psu i have no clue, a 40gb hard drive.
