My computer started acting wierd yesterday. It takes forever to load a program and my mozilla firefox takes forever to switch between tabs. I think I might have some kind of spyware or virus on the computer. I've run Spyware terminator and its found nothing, I've also run Ccleaner. The only thing I could think of that might have slowed the computer down is I took my expired version of norton antivirus/ firewall off startup because I wanted to use SPyware terminator instead. Anyone have any suggestions on what software I should install to try and speed up my computer(freeware would be great)

sounds like you do have some malware or a virus run a hijak this log for us and paste it into here..

Are you running norton, mcafee? You still have a lot of things for symantec on there as well as mcafee that you could get rid of as well as a lot of toolbars running and aol stuff?
Norton and mcafee came on the computer when I bought it and I never bothered taking them off, but my computer has been fine with both of them running, it's just lately its been really slowing down my computer. I did run this program called miTweak-XP and changed a few settings, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. Do you think Spyware Terminator is good enough and I should just remove the Norton and Mcafee on there?

This is just a personal reccomendation you dont have to listen but honestly i would take both norton and macafee off and put on avast or avg they are free and blow those 2 away they dont eat resources or anything at all. Also are you running those toolbars? Or AOL software? Seems like there are a lot more things that can be removed off your system to make it run better. Also what did you change with that program? Sounds like it might be part of the problem...
Can you link me up to avast and avg? Also I just changed back all the settings I messed with so we'll see if I change it. And yes I do use AOL 9.0 occasionally. And about the toolbars, I honestly don't know what to do with them, I don't use any, maybe they are the little search engines for Firefox, because I use a few of them, but I never have used any toolbars.

No those are the aol toolbars? What are you using in aol if its your just using the email or instant messanging get rid of aol its a resource hog as well and everythign related to it. Just go to http://www.avast.com and download the free home edition and then follow the steps for registration they will send you a key thats good for like 3 years to start with... After you delete all those mcafee and norton and such rescan and post another hijak this and we can look at what is still there...
well I just changed all the settings back to normal in the wTweak-XP thing and it seems to have gotten faster. I'm going to get rid of norton and mcafee, but I want to keep AOL because its got all my screen names linked together and I kinda got used to the 1+ minute start-ups lol. THanks a lot for all the info though!

you can also go to start run adn msconfig and then the startup tab and turn a lot of things off at startup that run automatically. What are you using to link screennames? You can change a lot of the aol stuff from aol and it will run a lot better for your machine...

I have the same problem because I installed Norton Internet security 2004, which makes my pc and internet quite slow. I was totally annoyed by that and I couldnt find what was the reason for slowing down the pc and net. i asked my friends and put a topic in here. but i didnt get the answer. Finally I uninstalled the norton antivirus 2004 and installed zone alarms. It is now working fine. so i would say it is some software that u installed newly. Can u think of any?

Try cleaning up your system. I'll bet your registry is full of crap, especially if you're constantly changing setting and installing and deleting stuff.
