hi there,
my computer is a pentium 4 2.2 gig on a perscott mb desk with 512 memory running windows xp.
it has only recently started playing up and ive exhausted my own knowledge and could do with some help.
it usually takes anything from 2-3 mins to shut down.
when you boot up into windows as it starts loading the desktop i start getting differant dll errors ive seen at least 6 diff ones and it states its shutting down.
ive cleaned out my cpu heatsink in case of overheating and checked bios and cpu temp rises to 31 celcius then stops.
ive tried to reinstall windows from my disk and only get as far as formatting each time and it shuts down but in random places of reinstalling.
even if i went into safe mode it still shut down.
the only time the computer dosent shut down is if i boot into bios which i did went for my dinner came back 30 mins later and it was still on
please can anyone help

Could be any kind of hardware failure - weak PSU, faulty RAM, a blown MoBo would be the first suspects on my list. I would get memtest and see if your computer passes the test, if it does, maybe try running and possibly even installing a linux distro.

thanks for the reply
i will swap the psu and check out the ram,,it has 2 sticks i will remove one and swap to see if that helps..
question---if windows shut its self down rather than just die after 2 or 3 mins but run continuosly in bios could this still be the psu.

You mean that it starts the normal shutdown progress by itself rather than just dying? In that case, no... if it overheats, it simply cuts the power without questions, like *slam* and it's gone. That sounds more like a some kind of virus/malware infection...

hi hackapelite,
that is correct ,windows goes into its own shutdown.
when i tried to reinstall i got as far as to delete the partition as to wipe everything.
so now ive no os.
it wont let me reinstall windows before it shuts down.
if on bootup i go into bios it continues running without shutdown untill i exit and attempt to reinstall.
do you think i can rule out psu or overheating and now look towards ram.
when you thought it was a virus or malware is that only when i have windows installed.
thanks for you help

iv had kinda the same thing. Try doing a full rebuild but only add what you need plugged in, i.e. mobo power, cpu/with heatsink and fan, 1 ram stick, 1 hdd, and gpu, power up and go into BIOS, go into system health or temps, and keep an eye on them for a min. if it doesn't turn off, then reboot and install windows, put basic drivers on and shut it down a add the rest of your hardware 1 by 1 starting up and shutting down to test each part. if it still keeps turning off running on basic hardware them i would have said it's a problem with your cpu or mobo. hope that helps

Hello everyone

Well lets see now, how long does it let you stay on for until it logs you out. If not to long, can you boot into safe mode with networking and download this link http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html this will help to determine if you have a virus. But if it is a hardware problem you should do a checkdisk scan to see if your hard drive is ok, you can get there by opening up your my CPU and right click on your C drive and select properties, then select the tools tab, then select under the error-checking section the check now, and then check the bow to automatically fix file system errors, then hit start, then you must restart your system for the check to start. hope this helps if not i will be here until it is fix

hi computer repair
in safe mode or ordinary windows after i put in the password and the desktop loads up i then got the multiple dll errors and it almost istantaniously began to shut its self down.
i tried to reinstall windows and managed to get as far as formatting and it began to shut down.i tried 3 times after that and didnt get past formatting so now i dont have an os installed but cannot install either.
the only time it stays running is in bios.
the computer is at my dads so i will try a few things over the weekend.
thanks everyone for your imput i will post again on monday with my progress.
regards
mark
