My Computer Needs Serious Help!

i have a Compaq laptop (not sure what model, don't have it with me right now). I've had it for about a year and a half or so. In December of last year (yes...i've put off fixing it for this long), my network connections disappeared..LAN, wireless, etc...the network connections folder is completely blank.

This hasn't really posed a problem to me because since january of this year i have been deployed to Camp Al Taqqadum, in the Western Al Anbar Province of Iraq (currently 9 months into a 14 month deployment); and have only used it to listen to music and watch some movies off of my base's ShareDrive. but now i want to fix it because i want full use of it when i finally get back to the States.

In addition to that, when i try to play a DVD, it plays choppy with no sound, any ideas on how to go about fixing this problem?

i was told that if i install a new operating system that it'd pretty much give my computer a fresh start, i was figuring on getting windows xp home edition, if i were to do that would it cause any problems with my disk drive, or wireless internet, etc? also, i have 2 western digital external hard drives to store all my programs and other important files, so losing anything on my computer during a clean install would not be a concern to me.

any suggestions? any and all are greatly appreciated!! as soon as i get the information i'll edit this and post my model and other information!

welcome to the forums dear friend.
As for your questions :
my network connections disappeared..LAN, wireless, etc...the network connections folder is completely blank
check in device manager and see if all drivers are available or installed !!
if they have a red X on them then it's not availble, if u see an exlamation mark in a yellow circle then update ur drivers
would it cause any problems with my disk drive
yes, formatting erases everything in sight, backup your stuff

when i try to play a DVD, it plays choppy with no sound
what are you using to play ? check the display drivers and see if they are installed they are known to give bad picture & slow playback
if they are not installed

i was told that if i install a new operating system that it'd pretty much give my computer a fresh start,
yeah thats one, start new but then again you don't want to re-install everything 1 by 1
