My Computer will not start, cant get passed safe mode

Hey this is Jonboy (created a new accout (bloke with anoying .gif avatar) cos I forgot the last ones login details)

Any way I have some serious problems my computer is basically not in a good way. I went to turn it on 20 min aggo, and it wanted to begin a pre boot up disk defrag, which is fair enough BUT it can't/wont and just sits there doing nothing. It says press any key to abort, but that is unresponsive. Only thing I can do is hold down the power supply button untill it shuts down.

So I start it again 3 times and same thing happens every time.

1. Get the option to start windows in safe mode
2. I press normal
3. Loading Windows Screen
4. Before login screen, I get IOLO Disk Defrag

So I gave up on that route and tried safe mode, it loads some stuff then again it freezes and stops and becomes un responsive. Please anyone hand me a lifeline, what the hell can I do?

My totaly uneducated guess would say the programme is told to start from bios, as it starts before windows is fully started, so is there anyway I can stop that from loading when I start up.

I would be very very very happy if you could help.

First some questions like,
1) which version of Windows are you running?
2) Is this being seen on a system where Windows was preinstalled?
3) Do you have a recovery, upgrade, or full installation disk onhand?

If you are running Windows XP one method of seeing the system running again where everything tried so far has failed would be to perform what is called an "install to repair". The disk utility you are most likely seeing is the disk check utility used to repair errors found on the hard drive. If you are running XP and have a full installation disk the details for performing a repair install that preserves your current files and folders can be reviewed at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

thanks I will check that out, I need to see if I have a CD as Windows came pre installed on the machine.

I am currently running XP Home edition (installed an update before I shut down I think, so could even be that)

Here are a couple of screen shots to as far as I get but then hit a dead end, well I call them screen shots more like pictures taken of the screen. Sorry they have not been compressed I don't have the softwear on this laptop to make them smaller. Scrap that you can do it on image shack.

At worst you could get a live cd and delete iolo manually.

edit: the bios isn't telling it to run iolo. it has to be a set to run. try booting with 'last known good configuration'.

The first screen shot there is definitely a breakdown of the instructions provided by the boot loader. The second screen is definitely a tool included by the board manufacturer. You would have to go into the bios setup to disable it unless you know that was a 3rd addon.

The last known probably won't even work if you are not even able to bootup to the desktop in safe mode. The last known configuration that worked is a recovery type feature while safe mode is a stripped down to basics shell in order to correct problems keeping Windows from running normally. You may be forced into a repair install to get the system running. But that would be far better then reformatting the drive like hear too often. That method simply reinstalls the essentials while leaving just about everything else intact except sound and video drivers at times.

well themiolo technologies is third party softwear, they are the makers of "SYSTEM MECHANIC 6" the bain of my existance right now.

What do you mean? I don't mind getting rid of System mechanic if it fixes things, not sure why it messes with safe mode though.

As for a repair install, im abit weary of that, I red the that link you sent me and it said, it should not be done unless windows already boots up, and I haveaccess to a cirtain file which I need to delete before I do it.

Hello, it is fixed :D. Took it to PC world and they did it for me, thats what the insurance cover is for :D.

Apparently the windows thingy would not have worked. Thanks for all of you who tried to help anyway, much appretiated as always.

The repair install would have worked. But that is more of a last choice before deletion of the current installation on any machine. A repair install repairs and replaces damaged and missing system files in order to get Windows running again without touching the softwares you have installed. It doesn't delete exiting files and folders.

Repair install would not have worked because it would have kept the installation of System Mechanic in tact. They probably manually removed it... Thank goodness for "insurance".

It would have worked and voided a warranty since that wasn't mentioned whether the system was under a service plan or not. Sysstem Mechanic probably would have had to be reinstalled afterwards? Don't laugh!

Well system mechanic is still on there, and they didn't do thatthingy you were talking about, they used a piece of there softwear to start it up, was very odd.

And as for the service plan I am probably one of the only people to have one but thank god I do, saved me a few pennies and alot of hastle in the past. But that means I can't upgrade my computer for 5 years :(, unless I want to pay over the odds for parts and get PC world to fix them for me.

When you don't custom build your own they do have a tendency to get you coming and going don't they? While you go    they can sit around and :D :D :D Meanwhile plans have to get underway here to decide what will be going into a 2007 custom build. First you have to know what hardwares will be available and in the budget at the time.

isnt there a key you can hit like ESC to skip that? try holding down CTRL while the computer boots...

On different makes you will generally find that one or more keys in a combination will perform a certain task at post time. On most boards the DEL key brings you into the bios setup program. The dealer's tech most likely performed a repair install on Windows under their own software license.
