My computer

Well i have some gateway computer but I forget the model. Well the motherboard and cpu died. It was intel based, but I was in hopes to switch to AMD, can I do this with no issues, or will things not go so well?

If the computer is still under warranty then you would have to get the same setup as before from gateway. If its out of warranty then you would have to build a new computer and you can get whatever you want. Most likely you won't be able to use the same case as the motherboard and front panel connections won't match up to the new motherboard.

You will need to reinstall the OS if you change the motherboard, and reactivate windows. Be careful if you do this, microsoft do not like you changing motherboard and the OEM licensing agreement expressly forbids what you are planning to do as they say that the computer has completely changed (you are allowed to replace motheboards with equivalent by same manufacturer only). If you had an identical computer, you could perform a sysprep on your disk to make it a general PC disk and reinstall the required drivers for the new motherboard and processor.
Whatever you do, I suggest that you revalidate windows by calling them, it's normally automated and will be less likely to pick up hardware changes.

Correction to the above posts.......

The pins going from the front of the case on any model are in pairs and are pretty standard. They may not go on the new board exactly the same way but they should be as follows: Power, Reset, HDD LED, PowerLED, Speaker and so on. Make sure you got the right ones and read your motherboard manual to match them up. As for usb's, they are standard too. As for the power supply, make sure you are not under powered for what you put in new, considering the ones that come standard in pre-builds are not very powerful (ie; video card, hard drives, optical drives and accessories). Also, we have replaced countless motherboards in these systems (aftermarket) with no problems. We have even told Microsoft and they are fine with it. Re-install, validate be honest.
