My computer's been attacked....

It started with an error popping up: The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE / Sata hard disks it is recommended that you restart the system then all my desktop icons started disappearing and my computer said the RAM memory usage is critically high.

I ran Malwarebytes, will post results below. The first time I ran it, it showed 13 infected files. BEFORE I could click "show results", it rebooted. I started back up in safe mode & ran again...this time it showed 10 infected files. I was then able to actually able to show results & delete the infected.

This is what I get when I try to run HiJackThis: hijack screen print.jpg
When I right click HiJackThis, run as admin. isn't to be found. So I can't show a log.

All of my desktop icons are gone. Internet Explorer is out of my programs listing. I now have to use Firefox.

Rerun malwarebytes in regular mode and post the log. To get past that screen popping up in hijackthis, right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as admin. If the option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijackthis to get it to appear. Then post its log as well.

Please do the following.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Puzzled...

Okay, when I try to copy & paste the HiJackThis log, it only pastes my Malwarebytes log. Tried to find system tools to investigate & discovered that it's also missing. I'm using the rkill.com as we speak. Thought about rebooting, but I thought that I should run it by you before proceeding. Thanks.
 
Reboot the system and run a fresh hijackthis scan and post the results. Rebooting the system will clear out the clipboard so you shouldn't have any issues copying and pasting the new log.

You really shouldn't have anything in your trusted zone as thats an easy way to get yourself infected.

You can uninstall the Mcafee security scan as its useless.
Providing you aren't having any more issues, you are done.
 
Desktop looks the same..

I've done as you've instructed. I also updated my Avast. Upon rebooting, my desktop still looks the same. Although Internet Explorer can't be found in my programs, when I accessed this page via a shortcut, it opened with Windows Internet Explorer. I'm currently running a thorough scan with Avast, after bringing up rkill. Before this happened, I had a desktop full of shortcuts w/a wallpaper. Now it's just a black desktop, with only 2 shortcuts that I've created for the purpose of resolving this. I'm baffled, but I certainly appreciate the help that I've been receiving, so I thank you again.
 
Update...

Thorough Avast scan just finished. It revealed one threat: win32:Alureon-AAV[Rtk] I moved it to Chest, but didn't delete...wanted to mention it here before proceeding. I'm now performing a thorough scan of all my drives with Malwarebytes (just did a quick scan before).

Malwarebytes just finished a thorough scan & no infected files were found. Still have Win32:Alurean-AAV[Rtk] isolated in chest with Avast & haven't deleted. Once again, I'm waiting to delete it based upon any advice that you may offer. Again, I thank you so much.
 
Okay this will be my second & final post.

I believe I have nullified and removed the trojan. By this I mean, the main .exe file which was the cause and all/most of the registry values which were either created or modified as a result of said .exe

Some registry values were created to disable use of the task manager, hide all files, remove wallpaper and of course to automatically run the trojan upon booting up. (to be extra sure double check which programs/exes you set to run under msconfig)

Use that webpage and go through every single file and registry value it lists while in safe mode. Good luck and let's hope this trojan is behind us now

Since Avast is still picking something up, lets scan a little deeper. Please disable avast's real time scanning before running combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

Progress...

After running the combofix, I noticed that many of my desktop shortcuts have returned. I can now find Internet Explorer listed in my programs as well. My wallpaper has yet to return. I thought we had ran this already but I guess not.

Please download and run unhide.exe as hopefully it should unhide the rest of your things and possibly restore the wallpaper.

The wallpaper should be able to be setup back up manually.

Thank you so much for the help that you've been giving me. However, when I tried to click on unhide.exe, only a blank page was brought up. What would be a trustworthy site to download from?
 
Right click on that link and click on open in new window. For some reason some of my links don't work correctly.

Looks like my icons are pretty much back. I had to manually set my wallpaper. Do you think it's safe to reboot now? Or is there anything else that I need to do first?
