Everytime i run disk defragment, its never completed.. everytime a bunch of files ( probarly the same ones ) are left fragmented.. i'am using the defragment tool which comes with XP pro

How long have you waited for the process to complete? Also, there could be errors that are causing Defragmenter to stop. You can do an Error-Check before you do a Defrag.

To do the error-check, go to your "My Computer."
There, right click on your C: drive and point to properties.
Next, go over to the Tools tab and click on "Check Now."

Check both boxes and scan. You will have to restart your pc for this.

as matt said, possibly worth trying a different program, i personally use Diskkeeper which has been spot on so far, doesnt tend to slow things up either

For disk checkup, i checked 'scan for and attemp recovery of bad sectors' and scanned.. and it ended without any errors ( it did'nt display any summary or anything just a finishing msg so i cant say much ) .. my downloads are not running so good right now but i'll try a different software soon enuf..

But i guess even with a new software the case will be the same, any hints?

How long have you waited though? Defrag can range from minutes to several hours like 4-5 or more if your hdd is big enough and you have never done it or haven't done it too much. From your previous posts, I don't think that a new program will help since you said that it returned with a bunch of errors.

Now, what you can try next is to run any antivirus or antispyware utilities that you have first just to make sure there isn't any spyware or viruses interrupting the process. Next, if you have anything that can run in the background or is always constantly busy such as an antivirus tool with real-times scanning, shutdown or disable those too.

There will always be files left fragmented, because they are in use. The only true way to defragment all the files is to defrag that drive when the OS on it isnt in use.

You can do this by creating a seperate partition, or temporarily installing the drive in another computer.

Auslogics disk defragmenter.. i used this and it displayed 189 fragmented files out of which 5-6 were skipped and the rest were defragmented i guess.. but in the defragmentation map i still saw a lot of RED blocks .. and then it showed that it increased the computer speed by 13% .. i defragmented C so i guess there were'nt any applications running through that drive as my WINXP is installed on d:\ so were all the programs running while defragmentation....

is it ok or do i need to do something about it?

Since you got it working on D:, and from your posts it does seem like there are background programs that are running that are interrupting the process. As far as the degrag go, their should be a legend that you can look at that will tell you which files are which (such as it being fragmented files, unmovable files, etc.). As far as defragmenting your D:,

To clear it up again :) ..

I scanned C:\ but my windows xp is installed on d:\ and as far as i know there were'nt any programs running through the c:\ drive and as the winxp is installed on d:\ so no background processes were running through c:\ either.. ( i've set the pagefile on c:\ thou ) .. i disabled all the antivirus/anti spywares i had and runned the scan and got the results i mentioned previously ..

I don't think a huge virus scan would help coz i have AVG antivirus and spyware terminator and winpatrol running already ..

I guess most stuff won't help solve this problem , so unless you think that i'll get a noticeable effect on performance or these errors are signaling a hardware problem i would just leave the way it is.. some suggestions would help offcourse

EDIT:
Here i've zipped the reports folder for AusLogics Disk Defrag maybe that'll help:
