Hi all, I'm running the Emachines AMD Athlon (TM) 64 prosessor 3800 = 2.40 GHZ with 1.00 GB memory. 32-bit operating system. Let me start saying I have no knowledge of computers I just use them lol. I know not funny I should know more about them. My problem: I can't keep the computer running its shuts off all by itself. Sometimes it stays on for longer periods and I'm just hoping it stays on long enough so I can type this info. With anyhoot, I cleaned the cooling fan and the power supply box just a simple dust bunny blowing. It seems I have no virus I ran a scan for 2 hours last night and it stayed on. It was on for 7 hours last night and I go to wake it up and BAM shuts off. I don't smell anything funny in there around the fans. And I'm hoping its not my hard drive please if someone could give me some idea as to what I can do. My next try is replacing the power supply box but I just don't know. Thanks to any that could throw some help my way. Again, it may take me awhile to get back I dont know how long it will stay on.

download a temperature monitoring program to see if any of your programs are overheating, speed fan is a good one. I sounds like a classic overheating scenario, and my first suggestion was going to be clean out the dust bunnies. When you turn your computer on, make sure all the fans are spinning and the computer is in a relatively well ventilated area. If overheating isn't the cause, then your most likely problem is the power supply after that.

If you're using Windows, you might want to try this option. Simply go to your desktop screen. (where you see the start button at the bottom left and all your apps' icons are displayed) Right click, choose properties. Go to the Screen Saver Tab, check to see the time for your screen saver to be seen, and then check the power button underneath and see how long you have it set up for your PC to shutdown. The ScreenSaver or the PowerSaver might be the culprits of your PC shutting down unexpectedly.

Hello again, thanks to the both of you for helping out. To the first reply, the fans work perfect no overheating. To the second reply IT WORKED!! Many, many thanks for your suggestions ( :
