so a few days ago my external harddrive crashed. neither of the 3 computers in my house will pick it up and neither will the ps3. i made sure its not the cables, the external harddrive still power ups. how do i go about maybe installing a new os on it? any suggestions i believe the hardware is fixable.

external harddrives dont have operating systems on them. They are just harddrives with a usb storage controller stuck on them.

Most likely the controller has fried itself, the disc should be fine if you can hear it spinning up still...

The only way to get your data back off of it would be to open up the external case, take the drive out and either put it into a new enclsure or put it into your pc and transfer the data off

i can make a diy on how to take apart a lacie if you want seeing as I did it last weekend and have pictures... but the board may not be fried...
the HDD might be dead or the cables inside may be loose...

why dont you open it up and give everything inside a jiggle to make sure that eveything's connected and in order first :D
