my first attempt at a computer

Hello all. I recently decided to put together my own system and could really use some advice. This is my first attempt at a build. My budget is around $1400 for everything (monitor included). I plan on using this to do everyday tasks as well a a bit of gaming and multi-tasking data analysis type stuff. Here is what I was thinking of. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could provide before I dive in!

MOBO: ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775

Graphics: MSI R4850-T2D512 Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire

RAM: Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

HDD: 2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2

Case: LOGISYS Computer CS888UVBL Blue Clear Acrylic ATX Mid Tower

Optical: ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA

Monitor: Acer V223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen

Thank you in advance to anyone who may advise.:)

Looks good. Just make sure you have enough amps on the 12V rail for your 4850. You would need about 30A total for that card, but I'm pretty sure that has enough. Also considering you're getting a mid tower, make sure you have room for that video card.

thanks for the advice about the mobo daisymtc. just out of curiousity, why do you recomend the x48 over the x38. i couldn't find many reviews on the x48 and they seem to be about exactly the same board. much appreciated.

Here the updated list if anyone is following. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for your help if you're kind enough to respond.

If you feel a little free with your money, you could consider the WD Velociraptor hard drive. They are insanely fast, 10000 rpm, and I believe they are comparable to solid state drives which are about $600 for 150GB. The Velociraptors are about $300 for a 300GB drive. Very expensive but it will cut all of your load and boot times. Not necessary of course, but there's always something better. =P

One more thing to consider is how fast technology is moving. The 4870 should last you a while. But if you ever wanted to upgrade your graphics you would have to get a whole new card. If you got an AMD mobo, or an NVIDIA gfx card, you could just SLI or crossfire another card to upgrade your graphics.

Oh I'm sure of that. But you know, the way technology is moving now haha. NVIDIA released 2 series in one year. I'm just saying if you want the computer to last you a couple years. The 4870 is still a very good card.

the WD 640G HDD is $90 or something has 640G room thats more than dobble the velocraptor an it beats the velocraptor in most tests

the plan was actually to go with the 4850 as was in the post. in a while if i would like to upgrade i figured i could crossfire with an additional 4850. if there are any suggestions as to that approach please do tell. thanks for the input!:)

on AUSUS's website they say that this mobo is crossfire compatable. am i missing something? it's very possible that i am not understanding this as i am new to this type of stuff. thanks.
