Hi, Im new to building computers but have pieces together some things that seem pretty good to me. This computer will be used specificaly for gaming. I want a computer that can play all games at max quality for a few years. I have chosen some more pricey components in hope that they will last me longer. Also I plan to upgrade to 2 video cards within a year so I went for a stronger power supply. I would love all of your input and suggestions.

A few questions. Do I need some sort of network card? What about a sound card, I plan to use headphones for a while. Will these parts come with everything i need; ie screws, cables, anything else? I saw in the sticky the guy used some spacers under his mobo. Where did he get those from?

I have never overclocked but the concept interests me. I have much experience modifying cars and tune my own vehicals. Will I need anything extra to protect my computer from overclocking?

I want to use windows7 as my os but not sure which version to go with. I have not decided on a monitor. I am going to go to the store to look at some to see what I like. As for resolution I have seen there is 1920x1080 and 1920x1200. Any reason to get one over the other for gaming?

Much thanks

I'm still learning myself.
For operating system I personally would get just the Windows 7 home premium.

Can someone double check me on this but I think that power supply is a bit overkill, he'd be fine with a 750W with a brand like Corsaire or Thermaltake.

Good choice on the graphics card, you wont be dissappointed =)

As Long as your motherboard has onboard Gb LAN you should be fine without a network card. Dont really need a sound card, but thats personal preferance.

I personally also would look at the HAF 922 case for you, good airflow from what I hear.

Oh yea, I haven't heard anything on that CPU cooler, might want to ask around on the forum about it.

You can save some money by going with the Phenom II 955 instead of the 965. You can give it a very slight overclock and get the same performance.

The power supply is sub-standard for something that powerful. If you ant a really powerful PSU, Corsair and Silverstone are among the best. PC Power and Cooling is even better but they're really expensive.

I would get some better RAM...OCZ Gold is ok but the quality control is pretty bad compared to others. My personal preference would be either Corsair XMS3 or G-Skill Ripjaws. You shouldn't need more than 4GB.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am looking into the processor, power supply, ram, and case suggestions. So other than these things the setup looks good2go?

FYI, this has been discussed before but an Intel i5 is faster than the AMD 965 even though it is rated at a slower freq. If you go i5 get the ASUS P7P55D (or some number very close). You will only need a 2 x 2 gig mem config.

Buy Window 7 64b, version is up to your needs.

Get a name brand PSU like a Corsair 750tx or 650tx, both are single rail and will power your system.

That cooler is fine, know to be noisy under load but cools fine. I have the 9700 version and it works well. There are many good choices, V8, Thermalright Ultra 120, Notua...

It's a pretty sweet build, but for the same price you can do better. I would change the CPU to a Intel core i5 750 and the Motherboard the a Gigabyte P55 UD4. Swap the Ram to some Corsair XMS3 4gb ddr3 1660mhz RAM and the PSU to a Corsair/OCZ/Xclio/Antec/PCPowercooling and so on. But otherwise than that, its gonna be hellova sweet gaming rig,

With your budget, I would recommend I7 930 with single 5850 instead...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125300

Anyway, if you want AMD, here is my suggestion

PSU - Rosewill is not the top quality brand PSU.
Antec 902 + Antec TPQ-850 850W combo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.345276

CPU + Mobo - I personally prefer Gigabyte than Asus for its USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.345260
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.345261

Video card - I personally don't think 5870 worth extra $100 from 5850

RAM - 2 x 2Gb is what you need

Dont get the Antec TP Quatro 850. Due to the 4 rail design you cannot pull the power properly for a single high end card. i called Antec and asked if they would recomend it for a single 5970 and they said no. I would use it on a 5850 CF setup though since you would use all rails, it is a waste on a single card.

I agree with Fatal1tyXx

An i5-750 with a 5870 will be faster than a i7-930 with a 5850. I know everyone wants to believe the 5850 is as fast as the 5870 but you can see the diff, I have owned the 5770 x3, 5850 x2, 5870 x5, and 5970 x2. The i5 will lose about 1fps but the card will lose about 7fps. You also notice it on the hard sections of games when the minimum drops, not just average numbers.

Alright I have decided to go with the intel i7 930. Based off the rest of your suggestions heres what I have.

That is a nice build. Your MOBO should come with one or two SATA cables but OEM drives will not. Your case should come with any needed mounting hardware.

Systems builder software is fine.

How does this build look?

First off, you have a good budget and go a lot of ways with your build. The build you suggested is quite expensive. Using the build below you save a load of money and won't lose any power.

Great choice of parts mate, I was about to point out that you should get an Intel setup instead of an AMD setup after reading the first post but I guess the friendly community here already got you covered.

I agree completely with Fatality in this, i7-930 over the 920 ($10 difference but you get slightly better CPU).

It will be one really good computer you got there.

Yeah just switch out the HDD for the seagate barracuda 500gb

That version of windows 7 should be fine.

I would switch out that case though, has a lot of reviews on bad flimsy parts (fans mainly, specifically exhaust and top fan). Might want to look at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119197&cm_re=HAF_922-_-11-119-197-_-Product , It will save you $10 also to make up for the i7-920 switch to the i7-930
-It's a very good solid case with lots of airflow and room
- And if you want to make it a little cooler in the HAF 922 case, you can add an extra two 200MM fans in it

I received all the parts on tuesday and put it all together that night. Took me about 3 hours using the sticky thread on how to build and googling a few things. Received my asus 26" display on wednesday. Set it all up, booted up and it worked flawlessly!! Only problem was the driver disk that came with the xfx 5870 did not want to work with windows7 so I had to dl it, no big deal. Im currently playing crysis on 1920x1200 with everything on veryhigh with 4xAA. I havnt tried 8xAA yet but the game is running great not skipping a beat. I would like to thank everyone who helped me though this first build of mine and I must say I am definitely hooked on building my own comp. Next thing on my list is to learn about OCing and try it out. Im also going to read up on multimonitors and crossfire, oh yeah, a new mouse/keyboard since im still using the same ones ive had for 8ish years lol. Thanks again.

Hey, I am glad it worked out. Now that you have done it is there anything you would have done differently? I think you have a very nice build.
