My First Build

So this is my first build, and I just wanted to run it by some people who know more than me before I put so much money into it. So if anything looks incompatible or excessive it would be great if you could let me know!

I'm pretty sure that's it, thanks if you look over it. Any comments, concerns, or suggestions would be great! I have all the peripherals from my old computer, so I'm set with those. Thanks again!

Yeah I wouldn't drop on AM3 at this point in the game. I bought a FX8350 when it was released, and that was in 2012.

Zen should be coming out relatively soon, if you don't want to see how that pans out then a Skylake build on 1151 is a better option.

Yeah at this point don't go with AM3+ since it is going to be obsolete very soon and the new performance CPUs from AMD will apparently be much faster. AM3+ is 5 years old now and the newest CPUs you can use with it are 3 or 4 years old. So if you don't want to wait for the new performance platform from AMD then go with Intel and spend a bit more.

It looks pretty good otherwise. I can't open Newegg links at the moment so I can't see what it's like, but I wouldn't get that case. Spend a bit more and look at the Zalman Z11 if you're in that budget for a case, or maybe a Corsair 300R or 400R or the NZXT S430.

SSD: go with the Samsung 850 Evo. You can get a 250GB one for under $90 which means you can put the money saved towards the Intel setup or maybe a nicer case like the NZXT H440 (my new favourite case!)

EVGA aren't bad for PSUSs but I'd probably choose to use a Corsair unit. Look at the Corsair CX750M or the RM650 or RM750 for good modular power supplies. The RM PSUs are 80+ Gold and are near silent, but the CX is a bargain and is still a great part.

CPU, board and RAM John recommended are good.

Thanks for the pointers! I get what you guys are saying about the out of date AM3+, so I'll save up a bit more and get the 1151 socket. Also a friend of mine has the NZXT H440, and it honetly looks so cool. I only picked out the Raidmax one because it was orange and seemed solid. I think I'll invest in one of those too. Should still have it before the summer, so I'm excited. Thanks again!

You can get the H440 in a black and orange scheme: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6180&cm_re=h440_orange-_-11-146-180-_-Product it's out of stock on Newegg at the moment (assuming you are American) but you can get it elsewhere. I've got a white H440, a friend of mine has this black and orange one and both look great. It's a great case!

Gaming computer or something different? AM3+ platform has still unbeatable price for certain uses. Also LGA1151 does not offer any better upgrade path as substantially faster future Intel CPU's will also require new socket (LGA115x)

I also would not recommend any 4 thread CPU for that price range anymore.

Where is your facts?

LGA1366 did not get any significantly better CPU's after launch.
LGA1156 did not get any significantly better CPU's after launch.
LGA1155 did not get any significantly better CPU's after launch.
LGA1150 did not get any significantly better CPU's after launch.

LGA1151, make a guess.

LGA1151 is a brand freaking new socket. You have zero idea of what you're talking about.

Intel sockets get old very fast. And what is your point with that "new" socket? Who cares if socket is new or old if it gets job done? LGA1150 is newer than AM3+ but it's more dead than AM3+ because LGA1151 totally replaced it.

Usually a socket (with the exception of maybe 1156) gets a tick/tock phase, such as 1155 for Sandy/Ivy, 1150 for Haswell/Broadwell, 1151 for Skylake and presumably Kaby Lake here (note the socket referenced in the article).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaby_Lake

With AM3, 990FX came out in 2011 and there haven't been any significant replacements since then..

Exactly and any of those made no sense to upgrade. Easy to estimate that Skylake to Kaby Lake will be very small upgrade, not certainly worth it.

Eh, although the same thing can be said for Ivy->Haswell and similar.

For the price he's going to pay on that build he'd get less performance on AM3+. You'd also have to factor in DDR4 on the newer platform and additional RAM capacity moving forward due to higher density per stick.

Exactly, so considering CPU upgrade, both LGA1151 and AM3+ are dead ends. For that dead thing, because AM3+ CPU's, motherboards and DDR3 memory are high supply, I see no reason why AM3+ is "dead".

Unless knowing what use that computer will come, it's impossible to say about that higher performance. For example I tried to run single virtual machine with quad core. After getting octa core machine, I consider quad cores useless for anything else than basic computer usage or pure gaming. Most people are happy with those but not everybody. DDR4 allows 64GB memory easilly true, however LGA1151 limits to quad core CPU's. LGA2011-3 may be better option if quad core is not enough.

There may also be another possibility soon. Socket AM4 will have better upgrade path than AM3+ or LGA1151 and also DDR4 support.

AM3+ is dead. Any of the chips you get in that socket are poor to passable performance in the year 2016. The highest end chip you can get is easily outstripped by mid tier chips of a Socket 1151, or even older.

I'm the closest thing this forum has to an AMD fanboy, and have an AM3+ socket setup myself. They're dead, and outdated. Move along.

AM3+ has wide CPU, motherboard, memory and other accessory availability so it's far from dead IMO. I consider sockets like LGA1156, LGA1155, AM2(+) dead for those reasons. Also AM3+ successor has not yet been released.

I guess I'm just chopped liver? I have only used AMD the last 8 years or so, have the 8350 currently. But yeah am3+ is dead and a waste to get right now. I just don't understand people's logic.
