My First Build

I guess I'm just chopped liver? I have only used AMD the last 8 years or so, have the 8350 currently. But yeah am3+ is dead and a waste to get right now. I just don't understand people's logic.

Yes. Finely chopped liver.

If that's true I feel sorry for you! :p You started getting into AMD as soon as Intel was beating them again if that's the case. ;)

Definitely don't buy an AM3+ setup. It doesn't matter that it's cheap or that there's no new CPUs coming out for it. What MATTERS is that a NEW platform from AMD is coming soon and that the ONLY processors you can use in an AM3+ board are so old and slow that they are not worth the money. You can't even use DDR4 RAM with AM3+. Let's face it: they weren't exactly great CPUs when they came out, we just recommended them because they were often quite a bit cheaper than the equivalent Intel setup and when paired with a decent graphics card (which you could afford by buying the cheaper CPU and board) the FX-6300 and FX-8320 often delivered good gaming results for less money back in like 2012, 2013 and 2014.

I think even a year ago AM3+ was beginning to show its age and I was starting to only recommend Intel for performance builds unless the budget was really strict. I used to recommend various FX processors (namely the FX-6300 and FX-8320) for the mid-range gaming PCs a few years ago. Then last year Intel came out with the Skylake chips that supported DDR4 and that was that: suddenly you had to use DDR4 if you wanted a performance setup and there was no answer from AMD at the time.

It boils down to this:

Do you want to build a new system next week? If yes, cough up the extra money and get an i5 6600K setup.

Do you want to build a new system in six months? If yes, wait and see what the new AMD CPUs have to offer. They may be cheaper than the Intel stuff (likely!) and will hopefully deliver good performance.
