This is my first computer build , I will post pics of what i have. Maybe i can get some advice on how to rebuild it with good parts. I would like this desktop to have some balls.
Heres my story ..... I have been using this computer dude to build my office computers for the last five years. I think he was ripping me off , and now I know he was. So I would like to build my own. I like to build things so it might as well be my computer. This particular unit I paid $1300. for two years ago with keyboard and monitor. I found out that he used pirated software and i cant download any updates from microsoft. And I found today that my harddrive is from 2002 when i bought this new in 2006.
Anyways , I want to start with all new OS and internal parts. Can you start me off by telling me if my box/case is usable . I believe the name could be lite-on?? heres the pic.

Ok , I have 8 more pics of all hardware & insides but cant resize them for some reason. I have vista on this unit and for some reason lost my resize feature. Maybe i can email someone the 8 pics and get them sent back smaller.?? thanks

That box looks like it is ATX form factor. That is the form you want...case should work with new parts. As soon as you can get more pics up we can start picking out parts for ya. We can walk you through the process. It is actually very easy.

Total Cost from Newegg: $710 Excl. OS (which is 150+)

Just Make sure that you put dust filters on the Case (Only on the intake fans, Front and side (if you put on the side)) And make sure to clean you case and components every month (since its so dusty) Compressed air will do

And you can get a bigger Hard Drive if you want, but I Think its sufficient (Ive got movies, pics, games and its enough)

EDITED: Scouts motherboard recommendation was better. This is the upgraded list you should stick to...

Thank you this is great i appreciate the help.
This is my intentions. The desktop will be at my shop/office next to my house . I will use it everyday for searching the web for motorcycle parts etc., browsing, email , storing pictures (lots) , working on some websites i have, no gaming, It is in a shop that has more dust than a house would. I want it to have some balls, I dont like waiting for downloads etc. Yes, would be nice to last for two years.
I will work on downsizing my pics. doug

Computer freak gave you some really good info. But...you might want to think about going with a quad core processor. Here is a great one for only $20 more than the E8400.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 for $200
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

Also if you want to save a few bucks...here is a great card for what you will be doing with the computer. Since you don't play games this card will be more than enough for you. And it will be easy to clean with the air compressor in your shop.

XFX GeForce 8500 GT for $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150245

These are just a few recomendations for ya!

Computer Freak is right about the filters...make sure you keep it clean and blow it out with air like once a week. Dust will kill computer parts. Just pop the side off and hit it with the air compressor. If you have anymore questions just throw them up here and we'll do what we can.

Xion II case
ASUS P5N-E 650i motherboard
Intel Q9300 OC'd 2.875MHz
Corsair XMS Pro 4 x 1 GB
Evga 9800 GTX
Antec Neo Power 650w

made some changes to the list

check it out

(Edited the old post)

And I was gonna say get the Quad, but i am tryna minimalise costs. But the quad would be a better solution. Sp the list Up top says it all

For what you want to do, If it where me I would just add a large HD for storing pictures.
Web surfing and downloading doesn't need anything fast and fancy.
I'd use the $$$ for something else.
I have and old 533mhz celeron the surfs the web just fine. I use it for Ham radio stuff these days tho.

But I do understand the urge to wanting to build one yourself.
I have about a dozen comps here but still am planning on my next one.

That would require a faster internet connection.

And you like storing photos etc. This is a powerhouse machine, more than what you need, I can make it cheaper if you want?

Cause it seems to be $950+ (with OS)

EDIT: Ive given you a P35 Motherboard, which is very good, but about a year old. Its dropped the Price by $70. It Does what you need though)

I agree with the parts "computer freak" has listed. The only change, I would get a motherboard with Onboard LAN. Below is one with a 10/100/1000Mbps onboard lan. That way you can just plug your internet cable into the port and be off and running. You said you want it to last a couple years and these parts will more than do that for what you need it for. And...it leaves you some elbow room to up-grade down the road if you feel the need.

If you are heavy into photos like you said you might want to think about a bigger hard drive. Maybe 500 Gb or even a TB if you move major photos. What kind of photo work do you do? Are we talking DSLR RAW images and editing them many times? If thats the case you can fill up a hard drive in no time with many many copies of one photo. Or is it just point and shoot and putting them into folders type stuff?

What internet service do you have in your area? That will help us to determine if you need faster parts or faster internet provider. :D

What is your total budget you have to spend? That will help us a lot!

My internet service is "Time Warner / Roadrunner". Or I will get a Verizon wireless card if you suggest.

My budget is whatever mood i'm in , but right now I would like to get it at about $1000 - $1500.

I would be storing just normal pics of interest to me. Prolly a few hundred at a time until I burn them to a disk.

Even though I erased my first pic. Its still saying I have exceed my quota. I wish these forums had some automatic reducer when you post a pic.
