My First Video Production Rig - Need Feedback

Honestly, you are wasting your time going for 7. Grab windows 8 pro, and start8 and you are golden with a much better system.
 
Windows 8 doesn't really look appealing to me. It has faster boot times but it looks like a huge attempt to compete with Apple. The flip screen of apps seems more directed to touch based screens. I'm open to being turned, but as of now it looks meh to me.

Edit: Didn't know what Start8 was until I looked it up, I guess that makes me feel a little better about it. The lack of start menu was a bit of a turn off.

you can use it just like the older versions if you install start8 or classic shell. And there is more than just start up times. The entire kernal is new. It is a new OS. It has very little of windows 7 and its holdbacks in it at all.

And use 7 if you want. You are only wasting your own money.

You're missing the point. After effects is an 'effect' application. The majority of the workload is 2D. Video editing is almost always high resolution 2D. Rendering is a 3D specific task such as GIS or other such rastor mathmatics (e.g. CAD). This is why you have the Quatro series from nVidia. BTW, its CUDA, not "cusa tech". Get it right ;)

If it is not working, then try compatibility mode for windows 7 or XP. If that don't work, then you need to update your program, as it is keeping you in an old OS.
 
CS3 is a right pain to install sometimes, even on supported OSes it can be a pain in the backside. Try running it in compatibility mode for Vista or 7 - I know it will work on Vista.
 
Yes i have had issues on Win 7. Its certainly risky. But you could use XP Mode and virtualise all your hardware. Should work fine.
 
I really don't feel like shelling out $400 to upgrade to CS6... Sounds like I might not have a choice.

I guess this might be a question for another thread, but would it be possible/legal to move Windows Xp from an old dead computer and put it on this new rig? Then buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade?

Edit: Looks like it's not possible. " According to the OEM EULA, systems pre installed with OEM XP versions cannot be transferred to another computer. This is defined in the OEM EULA.

OEM versions sold with a piece of hardware are tied to the original computer it is installed on. From the link [clarification], hardware can be upgraded and only the change of mother board will qualify as a non-original computer."

Yeah you can't move it. The OS is attached to the motherboard in the original machine.
