my friend got screwed

So his computer was slow as hell and had a lot of problems. My friend got it running good once, but it got messed up again. So he takes it to bestbuy to "get fixed" because he's a stuborn ass and wont let me fix it. Best buy charged him $300 to pretty much do some scans and install Trend Micro and webroot spy sweeper. When he got it back, it was still jacked up, so he took it back. They reinstalled windows and i think charged him again.

So in short, he probably got charged over $400 to reinstall windows, something i could have done in like 30 minutes and for free, and it would have been Pro, not home.

yeah some people are just stubborn and very gullible too. I guess that computer business bestbuy thrives on people like your friend.

very true.
men i always advice my friend to let me fix there pc but never try to bring it to a computer store cause they might jack you up without you noticing

in addition, small local computer shops are usually better than places like best buy. Smaller shops need people who actually know what they're doing in order to have enough business to survive in todays world. Places like best buy can hire people who don't know anything, pay them next to nothing and shrug customer complaints because they're so massive. If your friend won't let you fix the computer, i suggest you tell him to take it to a local computer shop, he might actually do that, and end up with better results.

well compusa charged 50 dollars just to put in a stick of RAM.... so...... your friends didnt get screwed big time! :D

My frist tech job was at a computer chain retail store that also had a serivce department. We were authorized apple, hp, compaq, sony, gateway, etc repair center. We did all warranty repair or those companies and of course non warranty repair. I have never racked up a 400 dollar bill on a client with labor only at that type of job. There comes a point if its not worth fixing we tell the client that and then just charge them the diagnostic fee and tell them to buy a new computer.

I suspect your friend is using a hyperbole when describing the costs, or perhaps a part was replaced?

Of course if its onsite repair then thats different because its billed by the hour.

No, i looked at the bill when he was gone. The cost included the webroot and trend micro software, but thats what $60? All they did was run some scans, some of which i saw were freeware(ad aware, hijack this) and install the software. That was the bill i saw, it was 300 flat. Im just guessing that the complete reinstall of windows had to cost at least 100, especially since they put it on there with out a recovery or xp cd. So i am possitive about the 300, the rest is a very logical minimum estimate.

Edit: to clarify, he brought it back f^d up the first time, so he took it back and thats when they put windows on.

omg! 400 thats like half the amount of a basic and usable home computer,
he could've just saved up for a new comp.
(money is the root of all evil)

Heck for 400 bucks he cold have just bought vista ultimate and let you install it lol...

except that wouldn't fix all the problems, and probably create new ones. I can't believe your friend even stood for that. I still don't believe they charged $400 with out replacing a part.

Well, first of all I just got vista from school for $20 and jsut installed it on my laptop with no problems. He could get it to. As for replacing parts, I dont think they even opened the thing up. As for standing for it, thats kinda how he was raised. He said it was messed up and took it there and his parents just paid for it.

My friends goes to the bike shop for a flat tire.....
Another one buys a new bike when he has a flat tire....

And they complain because they're not rich....!

So true mate...I use to work for geek squad and they rip people off big time on everything and if you ask them a real cpu question 1 out of the 5 might know the answer if they have time to google it.
Reason I never buy anything from major stores anymore...Tigerdirect and Newegg.
