My friend's computer has a serious problem...

Okay, so apparently, his computer got a virus. Every five minutes a blue screen pulled up and said something about spyware, then it flashed to something like when it's booting up, saying something about Rapid Antivirus... So he downloaded AVG and ran a scan and wiped all of the infections the log had, and now his Start Menu and desktop icons are all gone. I've thought of everything I can think of, using the Explore command, adjusting resolution... Is there an alternative other than formatting his hard drive to fix this problem?

EDIT: He's running Windows XP.

GO and download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. If there is still any virus's on there (which there probably is if all you did was an AVG free scan) this will get them. Though it is possible the the virus(s) have done some permanent damage thus you will need to format. You could also try a system restore...

Best to wipe the hard drive. Reformatting pretty much is a guarantee that the bad's are gone. Plug that HDD into another PC as a slave, take the files off...
