My laptop does not turn on

freeze

New Member
I spent pretty much about 30 minutes with my laptop outside the cold. Even though it was in the bag, it is not able to turn on. There is green light showing that the power is on, and red light showing that the battery is charging, but I could not be able to turn the laptop on.

Could the cold has been an issue? I left this machine pluged on the power over night but it could not help.

What can I do?
Thanks for your advice

Are you sure that you didn't bang it against anything when you were carrying it? As for it not powering on, have you tried popping out the battery and turning it on when plugged in? Now you said that the green light is on, but is that from the power brick or the computer itself? I've seen this happen twice (on a Toshiba & a Dell). They were motherboard problems on both. The so-called "geek squad" diagnosed the Toshiba with having a bad HD. Imagine that. Anyways, hopefully it'll work out for you. If not, I'm pretty sure its serious. Out of curiosity, what model is your laptop?

Thanks for responding to my issue,
In fact, my laptop is compaq and I had it for three years without any issue. I really don't think if I droped or bang it somewhere. The green light I was talking about is the "power on" and NOT the hard drive one. The red light, I was talking about is no longer there. I tried to pull the battery and push it back without success!

Any other suggestions?

When the green light goes on, are the fans running? Do you hear the HD going like when you normally boot up? If not, i'm guessing it's your motherboard/powersupply (not user changeable- meaning time for a new laptop).
If you do hear all that, try plugging an external monitor to it and see if you get a picture, it may be that the screen went out on you. Panel goes for about $200-300. May still be better getting a new lappy too.

I am having that problem with mine right now (Inspirion 6000) I am able to remove my battery and the computer will turn on.Looks like mine will be a motherboard problem, have only had this computer for 3 months.

was it turned on while it was in the cold??

chances are, you got some condensation buildup and shorted the mobo
if it's not still under warranty, then take it apart and inspect the board for any defects....if it's still under warranty then send it back and get a new one

Thanks everyone for responding to my thread.

In fact, I don't have warrant on this computer. It is three years old. I might agree that may be motherboard might have gone bad.

I really don't remember if I turned it off properly.

Here is my big worry!! Is it possible to make copy of my hard drive, and how? I remember I encrypted all folders, and I am not sure if it can still be accessibe somewhere else. In case if you dont know what I meant by encrypt is that "all my folders were on the green"

Any more ideas will really appreciated.
Thanks

you won't be able to directly use that hard drive on another system...as windows won't like all the driver conflicts (unless it's the same make and very close to the same model)

but you could pop it in another lappy and use a live linux disk to copy your important files from your original windows partition before reformatting

you could also get an external enclosure and hook it up to a desktop or another laptop and get your files that way. i dont know about the encrypted files though.

You guys are awsome!!

I will try to follow your advise, and I might get back to you whenever possible

Thanks a lot
