My laptop has no graphics card-help

Hello,

I recently bought a hp g62-a13ee laptop, it was really cheap, being a complete amateur when it comes to computers I didnt realize tht it has no graphics card (it says intel HD graphics with shared graphics memory, but the res is quite low, non of the logos are sharp). is it possible to add a graphics card? and how would i do that (i.e can i do it myself or does it need a pro)?.I only need a basic one as i don't play games, but the way it is now makes my job very hard (graphic design).

the laptop is 2.26ghz, 2gb ram, 250gb hd

thank you for your help

Every laptop I've seen has the graphics onboard. You can't add a graphics card to a laptop the same as a desktop. Some of them are on separate boards that can be swapped out, but before we worry about that, lets try to figure out why your current graphics aren't up to par.

What do you mean "... the res is quite low, non of the logos are sharp"?

I mean, did you adjust the resolution in Windows? You may just need the correct driver for your laptop graphics. You can get the drivers from the HP site, but I don't see that model #. If you could give us the serial number, I or another member could point you to the correct driver.

ya i adjusted the resolution it is 1024x768.
im sorry i really don't know how to explain better than that, i mean i open adobe illustrator and type a letter and it looks alittle fuzzy (not unreadable but something is definetly not right) while on my old hp it was razor sharp. the laptop came with freeDOS and I installed windows 7, could that make a difference?

like i said it says
"intel hd graphics with shared graphics memory"

the serial number is (s)4cz0210c2s

thanks

Not getting a match on that S/N - are you reading it from the white tag on bottom? Looks like this:

Yeah, TFT nailed it. It has a widescreen, and the default resolution is 1366x768. Try that and tell us if it's still "fuzzy"

ya thats the one i read it from... maybe Im just paying the price for buying a cheap laptop? i mean the closest thing i can compare it to is the type on a t.v screen

Turn the Color quality down in "Settings" to see if you can increase the resolution, only 1024 x 768 is not widescreen

OK. I see - since it came with FreeDOS from HP, they don't provide Windows graphic drivers for that lappy. Let's try this - download and install this driver from the Intel site - hopefully that will allow you to change your screen to the proper resolution. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19335&keyword="HD+Graphics"&lang=eng

ok im trying that now (fingers crossed), i have a bad connection so it will take a while

TFT i tried doing that, nothing, the only options are 1024x768 and 800x600

deanj20 are their any other things i should download tht freeDos doesnt provide?

Yeah, probably all of your device drivers. Go to Start-->Control Panel-->System and Security-->Device Manager and look for anything with a yellow triangle with an exclamation point or a red circle with an X

If you have several, it might be a good idea to download and install PC Wizard as it will identify all of your hardware, making it easier for us to find the appropriate drivers for you.

ya thr are 2 triangles both in 'other devices' they are 'network controller' and 'pci simple communications controller' it says they are not installed, thrs an update option would that work?

thanks alot for your help

IT WORKED!

just installed the intel thing u linked to and restarted, everything was perfect. the resolution is now 1366x768

thanks alot

ok i installed the realtek lan driver, the same two triangles are still next to network controller and pci communications controller, do these have anythng to do with the wifi? because not working either.

Yes - I'm sure it has to do with the wifi. Well, I can sem to find much info on that model of laptop. If I were you, I would try the remaining drivers on that page until something worked. Then, if you still have the error symbols, then install and run PC Wizard and give us what information you can about the mainboard, etc. Sorry - I know it's a pain in the ass, but meh - welcome to our world. Don't you just *love* computers!?
