My Laptop is randomly connecting wirelessly when my router isn't plugged in.

It all fits into the title. This is freaking me out. I don't know much about hacking but can this be done through hacking? What's going on? I have one wireless router and the laptop is connecting to a wireless network of the same type when it's not even plugged in.

It's just happened for the third or fourth time that I've noticed. On my system there is an icon that shows when I have a connection. One icon shows when I'm plugged in with a phone cord and one icon shows the signal strength of my wireless connection. I turned this computer on yesterday, the telephone cord was not in, the wireless router was not on and there was an icon that displayed a weak signal strength Internet connection to a wireless connection.

Just before I made this thread, the cord was plugged in and the regular icon was on, then I noticed it'd changed to the wireless icon, and, again, that router is not even plugged in. I've had the system for about a year. It's never done this until this past few days, that I've noticed. I'd at least like to know why it's doing it before I not worry about it. I'm particularly leery about this due to having had the computer worked on by an in-law who turned out to be a psychopath, some months back. Maybe it's paranoid but I'm not particularly computer savvy and I have no idea what a hacker can and can't do, ya know?

It happened again today about an hour after getting on the computer. Same thing, switched icons, went to the wireless connection, weak signal strength. I looked around the options and told it not to get the connection automatically, I think it was. Nobody has any idea on this one?

Its clearly not your router mate. IF its not plugged in its not possible for it to connect. You may have a router called the same. Change the SSID of your router so you can be sure.

I don't know what that is. How would I go about doing that, my friend? Anyway, I wasn't suggesting that my router was connecting while it was off. But that the computer was connecting to someone else's wireless. I know there's always a list of connections they show as available which aren't mine. I don't know. I haven't noticed it kick on since my last comment, but tell me how to do the SSID thing just in case? :D

Basically what you need to do is go into where your wireless network connections are stored and delete all but the one that you connect to so it doesn't automatically connect. If running vista or 7, it would be the network and sharing center and click on the left where it says manage wireless connections/networks. If XP, then read here.

Okay, thanks. In the network sharing area there was only one other and I removed it. But there's a list of different other connections when I click on the signal strength icon. There's no option to remove them, only to try and connect. Should I have it set where it is, on "no authentication required"?
