My laptop is underperforming...

Hi there guys, my name's Sarah, and I hope you can help me out on this one.

OK, I bought an Acer Travelmate 630 off ebay aobut two years ago, pretty much brand new at the time, 512mb of ram, 20gig hdd and I think a p4 processor, 3ghz perhaps?

Anyway, all was good in the world until for no reason I got that awful Operating System not found message when I booted up, so had to reformat.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any of the original discs left, and Acer wanted £80 for the trouble of sending out a few discs, but I managed to borrow a friends XP installation disc, and got it up and running again.

Though the only problem now, is that it has gone from an averagely good laptop which ran most programs, played videos great, booted up quick, etc etc, to a crap one which barely plays video at all, crashes a lot, and just feels like its about to die when you perform even the simplest of tasks. And also none of the laptop specific stuff is working, like the volume controls on the keyboard and things.

What bugs me the most is now it really lacks in performance, whereas before it was good.

So what can I do to get it back up to scratch? Please help me out here guys as i'm going to uni soon and need a laptop capable of performing even the most basic of tasks!

Thankyou!

Sarah.

First off install Video card, and your keyboard drivers, but I might go for another full reformat, sometimes windows will install badly.... Do you have all the windows updates too?

I'm just hazarding a guess here, because I really don't know, but I have an Acer and it came with the ability to make a backup CD set, which I did. What I'm thinking is that all the necessary chipset drivers and stuff might be included in that set. It makes sense. If the right drivers aren't installed I can see it underperforming. Did you check to make sure the right VGA adapter was installed for instance?

It sounds like a driver issue.

yea, it would certainly update your drivers. The XP drivers, go one at a time and restart after each.

aweosme, thanks a lot.

Also, does it matter that I've been using the laptop for a few weeks now after the format? Should I reformat or can I just install the drivers now without a problem?

Also do i need to install that flash bios thing? And what does it do?

Thankyou very much everyone, I was even considering picking up a new laptop a few weeks into uni, but now i have my old friend back to life, I can spend my money on drugs or something! Thanks a lot, you really saved me a lot of money and helped me be able to do all the stuff my laptop couldnt do (watch dvds, browse the net etc etc) which'll help out my course a lot!

THANKS!

p.s. the drugs thing was a joke
