My laptop sound doesn't work, what should I do?

I have the error code 1 for multimedia audio control. Also I have a compaq evo n600c, please tell all other information I need, what I need to download for that information, what to download to fix my problem, etc. Also I use Windows XP Professional.

The page there has the various links for all updates as well as several links for various catagories seen in the column on the left side of the page. HP also provides an online diagnostic center once you have provided model and serial number information at http://h50203.www5.hp.com/hpisweb/c...er.aspx?option=selfhelp&callfrom=ispehomepage

The first idea would be simply downloading the latest or last update for sound found on the download page. The code could also be hardware related in case the audio chip failed on you. A search specifying "code 1 for audio media controller" simply brings some 500 unrelated items at the HP support site.
