my laptop won"t turn off

I have a problem,my computer will not shut down,I tried restarting it,it kept telling me that it was logging off,but won't do anything,does anyone know what to do?

Hold down the power button until it turns off.

I tried that,when I turn it back on,it goes back to saying logging off,and not turning off.

Restart and tap F8. Enter safe mode with networking. Open system restore and restore the computer to a time before this was happening.

Did you hold the power button until the power light goes out? It sounds like you're just tapping the power button for it to go to sleep.

The alternative is to pull the battery.

Sounds like you also have some kind of corruption going on if it's taking that long to log you off.
