My LCD is 1080p, but what about a GPU?

Can someone clear this up for me. If my LCD tv is rated up to 1080p high definition, do I know if a video card sends out that kind of signal? I understand I would have to use a DVI to HDMI converter, but does that mean it is in 1080p? I've been looking at all the new GPU's and none of them mention what kind of HD they run. Can anyone educate me here? Thanks a lot.

Oh. So a high end GPU is still way ahead of monitors and tv's? Thats good to know. So, the rig I am building will still be better than my friend's xbox360. Fantastic!

Yup, and even an old FX5500 can display images up to 2048x1536.

Wow, I am in such a better mood now. I'm in a massive PC versus console war right now. I'm in the process of building a HD gaming rig that has to out perform an Xbox 360 and a PS 3. The hardware obviously won't be a problem, neither will my 1080p LCD. The problem is going to be software. Game companies are investing everything into consoles because thats where the money is for them. Even though our PC's are vastly superior in every way. Really makes me sad. :(
