My machine's memory!

Hi Folks, First post here, I have a problem and hope someone will be nice enough to help a "newbie" out.

Here's the problem, my machine is about 5 years old, it was built with one (1) stick of Crucial 512 mb DDR pc2100, has a Shuttle Ak32A Mother Board, and an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU, a while back the machine began running slower in most programs BUT particularly taking a long time to open "Word" files. I looked in "My computer" and it said I had 512 mb memory BUT when I checked on line with "Crucial System Scanner tool" it said I had only 256 mb memory. I figured the memory was bad and was fairly cheap to replace so I bought some that was "compatible" with my machine and put it in, what I bought was two (2) sticks of matching 512 mb of Kingston pc2100 DDR and now in "my computer it shows I have 1 gb BUT the "Crucial System Scanner tool" shows I have 2, 256 mb sticks for a total of 512 mb and NOT 2, 512 mb sticks for a total of 1 gb,,,, my system is supposed to take up to 2 gb of memory and my OS is Windows XP Pro.

Anyone know what is wrong?

I wouldn't really trust that program.. I would trust whatever my computer says.. Those programs can be jacked up sometimes... So whatever My Computer says you have, is what you have. Unless you put in like 4GB and it only showed like 1GB in my computer, then it'd be a problem...

I think the Crucial System Scanner found the type of computer you're using, and brought up memory info based on that.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the quick responses!

Mitch I downloaded and installed that program and it says I have 512 in the two ddr slots for a total of 1024mb so I guess I'm ok, right? This machine is definitely running slower that it was,,,, I wish I could figure it out as it is only used for Internet and office work. I do hope to "build" a machine someday that will be used for recording and mixing down music............. but really need this machine to do what it's been doing for as long as possible, just faster than now, I can't tell much of an increase in speed with going from 512mg to 1024mb of ram.

Wait a minute! How come when I check by going to "start" then click "System Information" then look under "System Summary" it says the following:

Total Physical Memory: 512 MB
Available Physical Memory: 624.28 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
Page File Space 2.41 GB

While under "My Computer " it still says I have 1 GB of memory, what's up?

You could also right click My Computer --> Properties --> Advanced --> Performance --> Settings --> Advanced --> Change --> And set both the initial size and the maximum size to the recommended size listed below it. Works like a charm when putting in extra memory.

When I did that it only shows the following with no other choices,

Total paging file size for all drives:

Minimum: 2 MB
Recommended: 1535 MB
Currently Allocated: 1535 MB

So I don't know what else to do..... anyone?

(Now restart your computer)

Ok I restarted my machine BUT nothing has changed, in "my computer " it still shows that there is 1 GB memory BUT in "System information" (above the start button) it still says there is only 512 MB of "Total Physical Memory" and now only 574.47 of "Available Physical Memory",,,, what the heck?
