My many Ubuntu 10.04 problems (won't install software, froze when updating PDF reader

...And wouldn't shut down last time I tried)

I had installed the system just fine, but it when gave me 127 updates it wanted to install, so I just let it do all of them. All was going well until it got to updating Evince, at which point the computer slowed down a lot (as in, it took literally minutes for it to react when I moved the mouse) until the screen went blank and it seemed to just lock up. After a good half hour of the computer being in that state, I just gave it a force shut down.

After powering it up again, it seemed fine, so I went into the software centre, which opened fine, but whenever I attempt to install anything, it tells me that a previous install failed and that I need to fix it first, without giving me a way to do so.

I then tried to install Google Chrome from the Chrome site, but the Gnome Package Installer said I had another software manager open (which I didn't) and that it wouldn't install the software until I closed it.

Then, oh yeah, last time I tried to shut it down, it didn't work. Wouldn't reboot either. Just sat there doing nothing. Had to give it a force shut down.

I really hate Ubuntu at the moment...

Did you check the disk for errors before install? It took me three downloads before I got a good copy.

I didn't spot it, no. I do remember it from previous versions of Ubuntu, but in this case it just came up with the instillation.

Oh. Well do you have access to wherever you downloaded the .iso? I would check the md5sum.

But is it saved on your hdd?

I would check the download md5sum. If you need help with that, I will be on later.

Yup, still have it on the desktop. Just ran md5 in the Terminal (I'm on a Mac) and it gave me d044a2a0c8103fc3e5b7e18b0f7de1c8 which is correct for the 10.04 ISO.

If I were you I wouldn't bother with Ubuntu Version 10.4. Go with Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 9.04. There are likely still a lot of bugs with Ubuntu 10.04 since it was just released.

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope runs fine with my system. I have been using Jaunty Jackalope for probably around five months now.

It's still there I think. When the live CD starts, you should see a couple of icons at the bottom - just tap an arrow key and the traditional menu that was available on previous CDs will appear.

As for your issue, Synaptic Package Manager can often fix broken packages. (It should still be installed by default - check the administration section in the system menu. If you don't see it, edit your menu to make it visible.) I don't think the software center can yet.

I'll try that today, thanks :)
