I have an Asus m32 series desktop with two sticks of ram one 8gb the other 4gb..Came like that brand new..Isthat normal to be mismatched like that?

Yeah, its normal. There a lot of machines that have 6gb of memory as well. So that would mean a 4gb stick and a 2gb stick.
