My mobo randomly wont see my hdd

Ok, here's the issue. I've had this computer for about a yeah and built it myself, i have exchanged many parts but never upgraded the
HDD or the MOBO. One day i wake up and it just tells me that my HDD doesnt exist. i know its physically working because i can hear it spin up with no clicks or grinding.

Download the drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it and see what it says.

The problem with that is that is says its simply not there. its my primary drive and i have no secondary drives to boot off of. When the bios loads the parts it shows the list as it loads and all it gives me is my cd drive and nothing else the hard drive spins up like it should load but doesn't.

Can you put the drive into a different system to rule out the motherboard and cables?

Um, the only rigs i have are much older and are IDE and the HDD is SATA. and the other is my net book. do you think it would be more cost effective to buy something like a SATA to USB adapter or go into a shop and have them test it for me? I just have no means of testing here at the moment.

I would say take it somewhere to have them test it. Or do you have a friend that has a computer that it will be compatible with?

I guess ill take it into a shop somewhere, but if i bought an external HDD enclosure I could test it that way? eh maybe if its the mobo ill finally have an excuse to upgrade to AM3 haha.

At first I was going to say the sata port on the mobo died, that just happened to me with the computer I built for my dad, intermittent just like you describe. Simply plugged the cable into a different sata port and bam it worked all the time again.
But then you say it spins up, then down, that leads me to think it has to either be the power connector or the HDD itself is simply dying. If you have a different Sata connector on your power supply, I'd swap it out and see if it makes a difference. If that isn't the problem, your HDD is failing and I'd get it cloned ASAP.

well there are some new developments. now if im lucky ill be able to get it to boot occasionally and its been enough time for me to back up all of the important files to a portable HDD.

nope but thats what im trying next. ive been trying too get around it without spending much but now i guess im just going to have to break down and buy a new hdd
